Do you homework and acquire a good dog of proven hunting stock.
Allow the birds to teach the dog after solid basic obedience.
Reinforce the good stuff.

Most important: do your level best to make your friend believe you are the most loved and spectacular being alive.
He/she will do their level best and then some to please.
Don't betray their love.
