I'm getting too old for this !

Post by Trekmoor » Mon Jan 21, 2013 7:49 am

I have never used any training aids other than my voice , a whistle and my ability to anticipate and to run when training any of my previous pointing dogs, (2 Brittanies, 4 GSP's and a vizsla.) I now have a 12 weeks old brittany bitch that promises to be a bit of a goer ! Even at 10 weeks old she would run 100 yards out from me on open fields. She is very self confident and I think I will have my hands full trying to control her.

Normally I give pups every opportunity to find game and chase it right off the field . If I do that with this one she is going to become self employed in no time flat for I can no longer move at any speed at all ....not even when walking. I am therefor considering putting a check-cord on her and possibly not allowing her access to game until I have established some obedience control. Since I have almost no experience of check-cord use what kind of check-cord in thickness , weight and length would best suit a brittany pup ?

Am I thinking along the right lines ? Will I ruin a promising pup by teaching obedience at a young age ?
What check-cords would you recommend given that I would have to buy it from America ? I live in Scotland and the nearest thing to a check-cord in the shops here is a clothes hanging washing line !
P.S. getting too old to move fast is lousy ! :x
Thanks

Can you get climbing rope? About 5m will do. Tie a clip with a bowline knot to one end, and a overhand or square knot on the other to act ad a stopper.

You don't want rope that's too thin or too supple. It gets tangled in cover, and can be dangerous if it tangles around your dogs' leg(s).

Lay down and hide from the pup. She will start looking for you in a few minutes.

I found the stiffer check cords work the best for my puppy and don't get tangled. I have this one and it works great $9.99.

Maybe, but you want a dog YOU can enjoy .

( If I laid down in the field to hide from the dog, I too would still be there a week later. :) )

Trekmoor, know that you are not alone. I had knee surgery 6 weeks ago, and I will be slowmoving on rough ground for a while. I have had good results using the Huntsmith Puppy Development DVDs 1 and 2. The checkcord is used a lot at first to put some steering and limits on the pup without stifling desire. I have used Rick Smith's method on my Brittanies and Lab, with some success. It is a step by step progression which doesn't inhibit the dog's joy in their work. If you go to the Huntsmith website and look under Resouces, you can access videos and articles about the checkcord. Good luck with your pup.

If I had to anticipate and run to make my corrections, I'd be like Forest Gump and still be running. :D

You can also make a nice check cord out of thin rubber hose, a snap and a clamp. It's stiffer and easier to handle then rope and will not tangle or snag.

A friend of mine has that LCS check cord. Good cord with one problem. Cut off that crap that holds on the snap and tie the snap on with a bowline know. I think that it was to long also, trying to remember. 20" anyone should be able to handle. It is, 25', you can learn to handle it but takes some practice.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

Bill -

Couple of suggestions.

If you are going to put a Checkcord on the dog, make up a real shortone( 1 meter or less) and clip it on the puppy when it is running about in the yard. that will get the dog used to running with something attached and dragging.

LCS might be willing to sell you just the cord so you can buy 50 ft and make up whatever length you desire.

Toss pigeons in the field.
A pro I know starts his setters off a 4 wheeler. He has a big bag of pigoens on the 4 wheeler and when he turns out the puppies, as they run about, he will toss apigeon and they will chase. He calls to them and when they come back in...he tosses another for them to chase. The puppies learn that he is where the fun is at and come in readily after a few sessions. They also learn that they cannot catch birds. No reason the same tactic should not work just dandy for a brittany.

Install a come command.

i do this with two checkcords, two persons and treats. I try to do this with a pup that has not eaten yet. Hungry puppy makes fotr willing trainee. I sit in the yard about 20 ft from the other personwith the bitter end of one of the checkcords in my hand. The other person sits with the bitter end of the other cord in theirs. The pup is in between. I call the pup to me. if it comes in...great. If not, I gently reel it in. In either case, I pet the puppy up and give it a treat. Then the other person gives the call command and repeats the process. In fairly short order the pup will be running back and forth to get the treats and it will become necessary to restrain the pup and release it when the other person gives the come in command.

Lastly...you can just turn and walk away. Pups do not like to be left out there and will hustle back to you(especially if they know you have a pigeon handy). Hiding behind a tree or tll bush does the same thing as lying down and does not require the services of a rigger and a hoist to get me off the ground.

I LOVE a bold, independent dog. Have fun!

Soundls like the pup is bold and confident. I would start with the obedience and then move back to birds. Control is always important. Without it your going no where.

Lcs has good cc's.
For a quick yet durable cc look at boat rope. I use medium stiff ,3/4 inch, 30-50'. Everytime you let the pup out put it on her and let the pup run the yard wearing it. This way she's used to having it on when your training. Kind o like putting a dummy collar on when transitioning to ecollar. Just she's not wearing it in the pen.

Thanks all of you for the ideas. I always have been in the habit of hiding behind trees etc. when recalling pups, I used to lie down too but nowadays I don't think I'd ever get back up again !

The pup is being socialised with a few other pups at the moment as she was an "only" pup and wasn't too keen on other pups coming near her. This is now getting a bit better but I will give her another couple of weeks in with other pups before beginning to train her.
This is the brit pup

The wonder lead is good tool for the intro for the corrections and modifications and use of a CC. It is an expensive piece of Rope.
That is a nice looking little Pup. I like it when they want to go like that.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

I trained for years the same way. Arthritis limits my running even more than turning 50. You might as well break down and buy a good e-collar too. Learn how to use it before you strap it on and I think you might very quickly appreciate never needing to get your hands on the dog to administer discipline. If you do consider a collar, go ahead and strap a dummy collar on her now to condition her.

Very pretty girl, by the way.

Thanks again for all the info . :D

Whoadog , I'm far nearer to 70 than I am to 50  The last 10 years or so has given all the wear and tear I gave my body a chance to catch up with me. I think I'll invest in a 4 wheel drive zimmer frame !
Thanks again folks.

Sounds like you have a keeper. I had the same problem with my 2 pups they were hitting 300-500yds at 14-16 wks old. I put a ecollar on them at 3 half months cuz i no i would of lost one or worst yet get hit on the road And i live on 375 acre farm. I only used it to protect them. You dont need to let this guy chase game hes got drive from what ur telling me. I did all my work in the yard with a check cord, no chasing just standing watching birds fly away out of a trap. It didnt hurt them one bit they both still have monster field searchs. I would say get him under controll and work on heel and come with birds in a trap make him stand them flying away.
