Pigeon Loft?

Post by RichK » Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:54 pm

I'm picking up my pup this week and want to begin training as soon as possible. I want to begin introducing the pup casually to birds soon after getting him but right now I don't have a place to keep live pigeons. I have the yard space but need to build or buy something to keep them in. I'm not looking for anything too big, ideally 4x4 or smaller, something that I can keep behind my shop. Any links or pictures of something that can be bough or built to keep live birds in?

I believe if you look in the GDF Hall of fame posts there is one explaining how to build one.

I built something like this for my quail johnny houses. You coud easily modify the front to have a vertical door, stand it on a couple 4x4's, add a pigeon door with a landing pad and be set for 10 birds. I used 2x2's with exterior siding and 1/2" hardware cloth. Takes me no more than 2 hrs to build one start to finish and have less than $100 bucks in it.

here is the post from GDF viewtopic.php?f=100&t=15397
I like the first one Im going to make something much smaller but that is nice.
I keep 12 pigeons in a 3 x 3 x 3 box I made with checken wire. they dont have a place to nest but they live fine in there.

For small areas I really like mine, even though I have more room this is all I need.

Me too...I asked Don F what he thought and he said just leave them for now and see what happens???

There is two others in the other box with no nest I might throw out when I can get to them....beats me I'm new at this.

Got two chicks hatched already from another mother so thats a start.

How many birds do you have in your loft?

Rich,
What you are thinking of is a "kit box" used mostly for rollers , I'd close up 3 out of 4 sides. Put in 6 v-style perches and you should be ok with 6 young birds (homers). Let them acclimate for 2 weeks. Loft fly for 2 weeks then you can use them after that.

I have great luck with an open front shed roof type loft..
My current loft is 8'x16' and comfortably houses 20-25 pigeons.
Bought my first gun dog 3wks ago and I can't wait to put my ex-racers to work

Sounds like you have 1 male 5 females, maybe 2 males 4 females.

That Scott Supply loft should work well. You can put a lot into a pigeon loft and all you need is a box that will let some light in and a door where the birds can come and go. Where to birds come and go you'll want well off the ground or you might have to shoot your wife's cat for getting into your birds! Think of it this way. If you got an MTY refrigerator box and cut a hole for light and covered it with chicken wire. Then a hole you could get into them thru and one hole for them to come and go, you got it. Figure two sq ft per bird.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

I'll be shooting at Glen - Greig Fish & Game Club south of Lowville NY sat from 12-4... I can bring some birds there for you to get started. Otherwise your welcome to come to my home to get a few pair.
I'll give you a few pair free of charge to get started .
If that doesn't work
i'll be at the Conesus club for an ATA trap shoot good friday if that would work better for you.
So many folks have been very kind to me getting started in this hobby so I'm happy to help anyone that's seriously interested.
Let me know.
Tom
