Training on WA Pheasant Release Sites
Training on WA Pheasant Release Sites
I'm newer to hunting upland game and training my pup, but I noticed that it said that training dogs on the pheasant release sites is open now in WA. I want to make sure I understand that correctly---I can take my pup out to any release site and let him find and point birds? Kind of seems like you wouldn't want the birds harassed during the off season..?

As of the 2013 edition of the bird regs there are certain spots open from August 1st to March 31 but I haven't seen the new regs. Of the 2012 edition it's page 14

That lists spots open year round. I assume everything else is open at the beginning of August.

Until birds are released to be hunted, there aren't going to be any birds there to harass.rja wrote: Kind of seems like you wouldn't want the birds harassed during the off season..?

Released pen raised birds don't hold over very well. I doubt you'd even find one. As I recall from a lot of years ago, preserves and release sites can't be on natural habitat.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

There are release sites on the east side...
Re: Training on WA Pheasant Release Sites
And I don't meant to imply that it's just on the release sites (those just happen to be the ones I know since I'm new to the sport). The guide says:
Bird Dog Training Season
Aug. 1, 2013-Mar. 31, 2014 - see license requirements (page 13)
(sites listed below this are those that are open year round)
The license requirement dictates that you need a small game license to train dogs on wild birds on the east side, and a Western WA license to train them on the west side. Obviously there aren't any here on the west side right now, but even at release sites on the east side you're bound to run into some wild birds.

There won't be any birds there either.......... Until they are released to be "hunted".rja wrote:There are release sites on the east side...

I guess I'm missing something---why wouldn't it be possible to run into wild birds on an east side release site? I ran into some hens last year and shot a quail there during the season last year.
