Re-training pigeons to game birds?

My 2 year old pup as been stf and steady to shot on pigeons beautifully. Tonight I ran her on chukars and she attempted to chase both birds I had out when I popped them. Is this normal when transitioning between different birds?

Yes take a step back it is a different picture in the dogs mind. Use a check cord, the dog should pick it up fast.

I have seen the same thing with my dogs and I wondered if the whirring sound which gamebird wings make on take off lured the dog to chase. Exposure to more chukar helped them understand that the rules were the same on gamebirds, but being steady on pigeons was easier at first. Maybe I'm out in left field here though.

Low flying and slow penned chukar are a major temptation for my pup, for mine the birds need to get over 5 or 6 feet, wild birds and pigeons get higher faster. There are a couple of things I might start tattooing on my hands,

when you think you have finished that step do it again tomorrow
don't start the session with new content start with success and end with success
the CC is your friend
if you change something go back a step or two
it's hard to make a step too small

Start over doing the same as you did with pigeons. Goes a lot faster this time around. The pup already knows what you want, but just with the pigeons!

Agree with the comments.

Whenever you change something .. ie.. location, birds, add gunshot, etc., always back up a couple steps in your training and start where you can make it easy to be successful.

Repetitions doing the right thing is what makes a dog react the right way in situations.
