DD training?

Post by chrisss » Sun Oct 06, 2013 10:03 pm

Does anyone have a step by step recommendation for training this breed? I am trying to get him to his full potential as a DD. What do I start out with after the ob training and where do I go from there? This is my first dog ever

The NAVHDA Green Book is your best guide for a DD. You are training both a pointing dog and a waterfowl dog, like training two animals and a heck of a lot of work.

The Altmoor Drahthaar Puppy Manual is as breed specific as you'll get for a DD or dog in the German system. Where are you located?

I personally found that outdated and hard to understand. The time lines in it are, to me, unrealistic as well.

Where did you get your pup from? Your breeder SHOULD be able to help you with this. I would also suggest joining the VDD if you haven't already, they have many training opportunities where you can get some hands on guidance from more experienced folks which is very beneficial, especially if you are planning on testing your dog.

Train the dog not the breed.

A DD is a dog just like the rest. He is a V-dog and needs to be exposed to waterfowl, upland and fur if you would like. But dont get caught up in thinking you have to train it any differently then any other V-dog breed. Its a dog.
