Tips for physical pre-season exercise?

Post by 10Sam29 » Mon Aug 18, 2014 7:05 pm

I would like to hear some ideas for pre-season physical conditioning for my GWP. We don't hunt the big open plains, but I would like to increase his stamina. He currently runs non stop with my G. Dane on our 1.5 acre property when out of his kennel for family time.

I run my DD off my mountain bike on gravel roads. I let the dog set the pace and stay about 10 yards behind her. We go anywhere from 5-10 miles. Ten when she was younger and in great shape. Now she's 10 and we never do much more than 6 miles. She wil go about 15 for the first three miles, then slow to ten for the rest of the run. They get hard as a rock.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

We run the dogs off of bikes as well but I'm trying to rig up an ATV roading system for the dog. I would say that you're a bit behind if you're trying to get the dog in shape for this season - you'll need at least 3 months of conditioning for the dog to be in top form.

Conditioning ah yes been meaning to get to that. Normally this time a year I eat a lot more red meat because I know that come autumn I'll be eating a lot more wild poultry!
Unusually by mid Sept I'm ready for change in diet!

You don't need 3 months to get a dog in top form.
