GWP Pup Range

Post by powbass@gmail.com » Wed Sep 17, 2014 1:38 pm

6 mo old GWP pup doesn't want to range very far out. Are their any tips to improve range without
using birds?. Don't have pigeons (yet) Have access to a ranch with scaled quail. Those running birds
won't let him get close enough for him to pick up the scent. Time of day is probably the reason. Thanks for any response.

You already know you need the pup to be finding birds out there. Only other thing is to say nothing- don't call pup in until ready to go home.

When you get to birds you can control. Start planting them at the edge of his range and until he runs out looking for them, keep them there and just walk him into them. As he range's out, and he probably will, plant them a bit farther. Once you have him ranging well, plant birds near and far. Give him a reason to go out.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

Here is a couple pic of the new GWP pup. With the use of a few pigeons he is ranging better. Still haven't figured out photobucket.

Time and experience. A 6 mos. old GWP is a baby.... get him out as much as you can. Get birds when you can, let him chase and have a grand time! Until you see that fire in his eyes... he can do no wrong. Enjoy this puppy hood- it goes way too fast.
