I like to run a bell with a Garmin Astro. The Garmin works great for grouse hunting. It is a personal preference but that is how I like to run my dog.

Do you run a ecollar also or just the Astro?

I also run an ecollar. I have the tri tronics sport basic g3 and like it. I also just got a pro 500 and like that too.

I use the garmin astro and I use my beeper as a call back I think with the gps you can hunt silent and I think the birds hold better if I want to change direction I give the call back with the beeper

Same here, I started using a bell on my dogs towards the end of grouse season an I don't know why I didn't use one before it helps a lot if a dog is in real thick cover an goes on point .

Not even close. Astro wins hands down. No more clanking, beeping, scaring birds. Silence kills.

How hard is it to find the dog when on point?

I tried both I prefer a bell and the astro, its fun how I can hear the dog go on point, before the astro tells me she one point, in most cases

I prefer the alpha for hunting, but once we start hiking with the dogs this summer I'll add the bell just to alert the Bears that we are coming and hopefully avoid any bruin encounters of the wron kind!

Not allowed? What's the reasoning for this?

It is a regulatory thing with the frequency the collar uses, they even patched it that it won't work north of the border. What do folks think about the sport dog gps collar that one does work in Canada .

What does the frequency interfere with?

When hunting in thick grouse/woodcock cover, I use the following:

- #6 Sheep bell
- Dogtra 2200 Beeper Collar (in silent mode)
- Garmin 220 (just in case)

If/when I hear the bell stop suddenly & I get to the last known location
of the dog and I can't see them, that's when I hit the "locate" button on
the Dogtra handheld. If for whatever reason, I can't hear the beep- that's is
when I go to the Garmin for location/distance.

So far, I have yet to not bring a dog back to the vehicle with me at the end of the hunt.

Farmers and their combines :)

In Canada the range of frequency that the Garmin uses is used under license only(usually specialty GPS applications like precision farming) , so a regular consumer device is SOL.

To be honest, most everyone I know uses the Garmin up here,(Ontario) anyway, ( not me I'm a rule keeper :) Never heard of anyone I know using the Sport.

This one has me confused

Changes made from version 3.40 to 3.60:
◦Disabled dog tracking when used in countries for which the radio frequencies are not authorized.

From http://www8.garmin.com/support/download ... sp?id=5483

So I guess folks are not doing firmware updates or hacking the unit somehow?
