Jumping pup
Hey guys. I've been on the forum awhile just never registered. Little about myself. I hunt, fish, pretty much if its outside I'm all for it. I just recently got a gsp as I've always wanted to bird hunt. I went with this breed as I'm very active outdoors. I got remi at 8 weeks old. Her training so far is going ok. The only issue I'm having is her jumping. With other breeds I've owned was pretty simple. Not so much with remi. I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. She loves people and anytime someone wants to pet her I have to warn them so they don't get scratched from her jumping. I've talked to lots of trainers. All tell me she's to young for training. She's 4 months old. I understand she's a pup. I just want to nip this in the rear now. Instead of waiting til she's older and it gets worse. Any advice is very much appreciated.
Re: Jumping pup
When mine were jumping pups and they jumped on me, I'd knock them over and say "Stop it!"
We'd practice with other people by asking folks to knock and come in, the pup being on a lead. When it jumped, yank the lead and knock pup over and say "Stop it!"
Any time pups jumped, knocked 'em over however we could, and tell them to stop it.
Rude pups get rude treatment right back, not polite requests.

Lead training is going good. I ended up having to get a prong collar. Used it two times and she's doing good without it. I'll try the knock them over method. Thank you for the advice.

I've found that a 'Dazer' works well with these ones
Re: Jumping pup
I just keep the lead on and let her drag it around. When started to jump up I put my foot on it she got no where. It pulls Them back down

I don't have any experience but if you Google it, you can see it. I am curious to learn more as I have a young dog that just doesn't seem to get on the program.nevermind wrote:Please tell me.... what's a "Dazer" ?polmaise wrote:I've found that a 'Dazer' works well with these ones

Like it say's.
And like any 'tool' , used correctly with timing the behaviour can be changed.

I think I might give that dazer a go. I did learn that petco offers puppy obedience training which is nice. Could take her there as a last resort.
Re: Jumping pup
Puppy classes aren't a last resort. They are a wonderful opportunity for a pup ( and a new owner), to learn many things.

Re: Jumping pup
I was never a fan of 'puppy classes' , per se' .
Those ones that advocate 'socialisation' ! ?...The puppy has learned or should have learned all the socialisation with other puppies in the litter and from mum ?. The socialisation is better earned/learned with the new owner or 'owner's ' .
Around the 4-6 month stage they get 'confidence '.

Got ya. She goes everywhere with me. Unless I'm at work of course. She's a very happy pup. Only people I won't let touch her is the elderly. As they have paper thin skin and with her jumping she'll hurt them. I just found out about the pup training today at petco. My biggest thing is I wanna learn while she is learning.
Re: Jumping pup
How old are you when you become elderly? I probably better get rid of the dogs and birds since I might be close to that paper thin skin thingy. Was sitting on the 4 wheeler today when Rush came running in from the side and jumped into my lap and bounced on over to the other side.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: Jumping pup
I reckon I'll allow and welcome a youngster to puncture my frail frame on the day I die , for they know no different. Others who have not had dogs all their lives have different tolerance or understanding. That doesn't make the pup or the elder any wiser or smarter than any one else. Just different.ezzy333 wrote:How old are you when you become elderly? I probably better get rid of the dogs and birds since I might be close to that paper thin skin thingy. Re: Jumping pup
I don't mean it like that. From her jumping she's already did a number on two people. Both were elderly people (good friends of mine). With there skin being paper thin (from taking certain medication) there arms weren't very pretty at all. She just gets excited and wants to be petted. If I can get her to not jump then I'd have no issue with whomever touching her. I always warn people that she jumps and her nails are sharp. But not everyone listens. I don't mean any disrespect at all by any means. Just looking for advice is all.

Re: Jumping pup
Hello, My GSP pup is currently 3 1/2 month old and loved to jump. For me it just takes training and lots of time. Each time that he tried to jump I would put my hand down and push his head down and say down, give him a treat if he stays down, reward him for his good behavior. I always try and predict when he will jump up so I can have my hand out before he even makes it up. I have an old book that says give him a little knee or shove in the chest to back him off. Some people now days will not believe in this method of training but to me im not doing it hard, just more of a shove to push him back and to the ground. Just keep practicing the hand technique and always say down or whatever command you please.
