Perfect start perfect finish dvd's

I am starting to realize I know less than I thought I did so I'm looking for a dvd set from a trainer to get me some better foundation.

This one seems to have pretty wide acceptance, and a good deal of fans.

Should I look else where, or add onto getting these?

Thanks,
Spot

I was new to the training game 4 years ago. Purchased several books and videos, The Perfect Start/Finish is the one I like most. I like the idea of a happy dog through the training process.

I just found out that they are only an hour or so from my house, so I may go do a clinic with them as well.

Cool...

I ordered the perfect start DVD's...

Very true. I like to learn about the different techniques out there. Spent more money on books & DVDs than I did on the dog  But true, pick a program and stick with it.

I highly recommend them. They really break the processes down into steps the dog can understand.

It clearly works as you can see them take multiple untrained dogs through the whole process.

For the Perfect Start specifically, a couple of years ago we used their methods on at least 4 young dogs that were questionable on pointing and they all ended up prizing in their NAVHDA Natural Ability tests.

One thing that is missing is retrieve training but they are supposedly coming out with a video for that (was supposed to be done last summer but still isn't...)

Oh, and you will need a lot of pigeons so I'd get started on some homers or find a place you can reliably trap barn pigeons.

New to the board, but have used Jon's method for 10 years, his clinics are great, so much wisdom, simple logic, dogs learn.

I just ordered his retrieve series, just out.

I agree to previous post, pick one guys method and stick to it.

Kind of like a recipe, follow the steps and you will have a bird dog at the end.

I have a place to trap feral pigeons, so I'll try going this route...

I also have a place that has plant and hunt birds, and one of the local guys will plant them for you to do training...

Thanks for the tips... I'm going to be trying my best

You'll want a remote controlled bird launcher or 7 to use with the pigeons... :) Seriously though, I'd get at least 2 and as many as you can afford.

Also, if you're following the Perfect Start/Finish method, then you won't be using planted birds until late in the steadiness process.

What you don't want is for the dog to catch a bird. If you could train on wild birds, you'd be golden but planted birds often don't fly well so the dog will be able to catch them and that just teaches them to chase rather than point and remain steady to the flush, shot, and fall.

Jon Hann is one of the best trainers around, his Perfect Start and Perfect Finish videos are the best in my opinion but admittedly there are other good ones. I also just purchased the Perfect Retrieve but have not yet had a chance to watch it.

I have been to a Jon Hann seminar and was well worth the time, so much so that I have signed up to attend a Clinic at their kennel later this spring.

If you are within a reasonable drive of KC, I would recommend taking you and your pup and going to a clinic.

I'm definitely going to get bird launchers, and use birds...

I bought the perfect start DVD, I tried ordering if from the maker but they only sell it through the gundogsupply now so I had to re-order it... So I haven't gotten it yet.

I'll definitely check out the clinic, they are only 1.5 hours drive from me... I wanted to send Remy to the full month perfect start but the cost is too high and MOM said nope... :)

I got back home TUE nite from the Clinic. It was a great experience. I learned more about my dogs (and handling my dogs) that I ever imagined. Learned just as much watching the other dogs as Jon and Jessica worked with them and their owners. Highly recommend. It was worth the 14 hour drive!

Fun Dog, that will be a hike for you to go to Perfection Kennels. How many days would that be for you to make the trip? I have attended Rick Smith Seminars, and would like to also try the Jon Hann series, but the drive is the sticking point. I figure it to be 2 1/2 to 3 days each way. Won't be going this year, but there is always next year. Have a great time.
