Let's see/or tell us what your favorite training tool is
As the title says, tell us what training tool (other than birds) you can't live without, if you have retrievers/pointers specify that too. I have a few but my favorite for retrievers/pointers would hafta be a Training table.

Wild birds. My youngest dog has practically broke herself playing with wild coveys this past hunting season. A little polish and we should be good to go!

Absolutely, I think that a launcher would be 2nd on the list for both. Bird for pointers and dummy for retrievers. After that maybe a check cord for pointers and a place board for retrievers.ezzy333 wrote:An e-collar by a mile

Re: Let's see/or tell us what your favorite training tool is
In early development hands down it would be a Garmin (4 months to 14 months old) when you start formal training it would be a leather pinch and a 12 foot check cord. But if I have to pick a favorite, it would be a Garmin. This is coming from an upper mid-west grouse hunter with pointing dogs.

Check cord, Duct tape.
Check cord for the dog to assist, or help assist it.
Duct tape for the peoples mouths watching whats going on, and wanting to whoa the dog, and not realizing.....they are even doing it.
Thanks Jonesy

Got me thinking ?
'What would you do if your best tool was no longer available' ? ..Surely second best would be just that?...
How would you improvise ,as a Trainer ?.

Re: Let's see/or tell us what your favorite training tool is
It depends on the stage of the dogs life.
All I ever train with is wild birds, and I cannot imagine having to use pigeons!
Though I am shooting pigeons for my GSP in preparation for an upcoming AKC trial that she has to retrieve.

No GPS and no e collar and no microchip and running beagles back in the early 60's...... We lost dogs .polmaise wrote:Got me thinking ?

A hound that can be re-called off game isn't much of a hound. I absolutely love beagles.

We're not talking about spaniels. Beagles can move on over 2 concessions++ tracking rabbit. No way for the handler to be heard that far away.polmaise wrote:No re-call Huh ?

Probably why our hounds are followed by Horseback and a Horn.

Re: Let's see/or tell us what your favorite training tool is
I would say a check cord. I have worked an helped/shown, a lot of people with even just a cord. Rope, and or air hose, can be widely, and usually easily purchased. I will adjust my timing, and my hands, to help get done, what I need to get done. Thanks Jonesy

After due consideration I have come to the conclusion that my favourite training tool is a good pair of walking boots.
