I have a small Munsterlander, this is my first pointer. I have trained a couple labs for waterfowl so that's what I know. My SM is 13 weeks old and he sits, stay and fetches well. He loves the pond and likes water retrieves. Question Is :
Example:: I toss a bummer in the tall grass and send him to retrieve. Am I giving him bad habits to send him barreling in there a return with bumper.
Is my waterfowl training taking away his pointing?

Re: Pointer pup question
Not something I'd do. You need a plan. Sounds like you have an real winner there.

Re: Pointer pup question
Sharon knows a lot more about pointing dogs than I, and she's right about finding a program to follow.
Personally I think retrieving and pointing are two separate mechanisms. Also, my understanding is that munsterlanders develop slower and may not point until later.
But again, get on a program.

Re: Pointer pup question
Do your pup a favor . Put your retriever back ground up for a while. Find ways to get your SM pup using his nose finding birds.
I have work with a dozen or so LM's and 2 SM's they are slow to mature and can lack intensity on point and even using their noses, they all loved to retrieve, and normally love water as well. If all you are going to do with the SM is duck hunt then disregard my post if not put the little guy into bird finding situations. Give him a chance to be a bird dog first and a retriever 2nd.
