Does 2nd dog heel on left or right?

Post by aldarling » Sun Aug 28, 2016 8:47 am

I'm sure this has already been covered, but I wasn't able to find it. When you add a 2nd dog to your team, do you train it to heel on the left beside the first one or on your right? Thanks.

Mine all heel on my left side and haven't been a problem. Never tried it with more than three.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Correct. But I haven't tried with more than two. Don't want to. Dogs, that is. :|

For "heel" on the left side, dogs side by side. I've done it with 4 dogs, all in perfect formation. I don't want dogs on my gun side.

For working, I prefer a looser "follow" (or command of your choice), sort of on my left or slightly behind me, within maybe 3-5 feet. Too sloppy for a heel but a lot less tiring for the dog. Heel is intense concentration for the dog, so it is tiring. Different command and the dogs understand the difference.

Be sure to train them individually first, so they are completely solid. Mine both heel on my left side when I have both heeling at once (a rare occasion), but at first they tried to "compete" with each other, trying to get ahead of the other. Now they've done it a few times they heel as they normally would.
