DC 40 collar on a Brittany

I picked up a refurbed Astro 320 and now I am looking into which collar I want to pair up with it. I am looking at the DC40 and I am wondering how many people run their Brittany with it. Some say it is heavy for smaller dogs but I figure people have used them for years before there was the option for a mini collar. The T5 mini specs a range of 4 miles and the DC40 specs it at 9 miles. Also, can a shorter collar be used with these? I don't know how they go together and the DC40 says 12"-20" neck. My 5 month old is about 10" neck but needs the collar.

Your Thoughts/Comments are appreciated .

I wouldn't worry too much about the physical size of the locator collar.

The DC 40 has been a very reliable collar for folks. I know a couple of pros who use that model and like it.

The new t5 mini is also a good choice, but you will probably not be able to match the price point you will get on a used DC 40. There are no more new DC 40's available as I understand it.

I originally had a 220 and the DC 30 and 40. They worked fine. I lost the 220 and upgraded to the 320 The 320 handheld started screwing up after a very few months and rather than go round and round during the trial season with a defective unit I upgraded to a 430 with a t5 and t5 mini.

Bottom line: Both will do a fine job.

The collar strap lengths are the same on the different units.

The T5 mini is considerably lighter than the T5 - my Jagdterrier (20 pounds) is ok with the mini but the T5 is a bit much for her.

To increase the range of the mini, I upgraded the antenna on the 320.

According to Garmin the DC40 and T5 mini weigh about the same (5.1 oz for unit with antenna), and the DC40 is about 1 oz heavier with collar. I think the mini has a 3/4" collar and the DC40 is 1".

T5 mini: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/01 ... additional

DC40: https://buy.garmin.com/en-CA/CA/p/68084#specs

I don't have a mini so I am not sure if the spec weights bear out in reality.

RayG, thanks for sharing. You may have identified a problem I'm having with my 320/DC30 system. Much appreciated Sir.

I went with the DC40. I’ll have the Astro 320 and DC40 setup so we will see how it works.

Thanks for all of the responces.

My dc40 and Astro 320 were OK... so I thought until I got the Astro 430 and t5. Get the bigger collar for more range. My old dc40 lost contact at 200-300 yards until I installed a longer antenna on both handheld and collar. Since I got the 430 and t5 I have not lost contact and the compass is alwYs correct. Definitely get the long range antennas for your setup!

Ive ran the 320/dc40 for years, no complaints in a myriad of terrain/weather. If it doesnt fit, just punch some new holes in it, no big deal.

I have both collars. My postal scale says they both weigh 5.15 oz, including some dog hair and a mud smear..............
My little (35 #) Setter wore the DC 40 for many years and never seem to even notice it.........

I think the TT collar has better reception under the forest canopy than the DC 40. But DC40 has better range in open country.
