Georgia Giant Bobwhite Quail

Post by Higgins » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:03 pm

Does anyone have experience with Georgia Giant Bobwhites? I hear they fly well and are used for training and release birds at clubs.

I know Tennesse Reds are bigger and fly well.

IMHO I would not give .15 cents for a Georgia Giant, Tennessee Red, or a Michigan Humongous unless I was into quail egg potato salad.
And I was in the Game bird business for some 25 yrs.

Regular bobs that are flight conditioned are good as any.

My experience with all types of Bobwhites has been highly variable. The birds I've used from reputable breeders that have been flight conditioned have only been good fliers about 60% of the time. Those birds I've bought that were from much cheaper sources turned out to be weak fliers about 70% of the time.

Valley Quail, which are very hard to find, are almost always strong fliers.

I now use pigeons in most training, and switch to Chukar to steady the pup and prepare for his first exposure to wild birds in hunting season.

I tend to agree with gundogguy and Bonasa. Quality quail are not defined by color phase or size. I've used Tennessee Reds before. The only discernible difference I noticed was their color.
Funny....I've made that similar observation re bird dogs.

In my experience the large birds of any specie are good for the table but are not good flyers

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
