Frozen Birds

Post by Danro » Tue Jan 30, 2007 8:14 pm

Whats the best way to freeze a bird? Do you kill them first or tie their wings down and freeze them alive? Freezing them alive is probably the most humane, because eventually, they'll get so cold they'll fall asleep and die in their sleep. Is this true?

I would rather be shot than freeze to death. I shoot my birds then freeze some for training why not use them twice.

Here is a truth you learn as a hunter. You have the power of life and death over animals. If you have no reason to kill something, do not. If you have a reason, then kill it as swiftly as possible. There is no honor either in killing needlessly, nor in causing a lingering death.

The best way to put training birds to sleep with no pain is to go to your Vetinarian and ask for a shringe with a small needle. Put 5 cc of rubbing alcohol in the shringe. Take the head of the bird and put it down torwards its neck. Feel the back the head of the bird and you will feel a crease. Poke the needle in the creese and inject the 55 cc of rubbing alcohol. Birds go to sleep immediately. No pain. Freezing would not be the way to go. Good luck

Inject rubbing alcohol!

I think most of us do things a slightly different way!

Shoot them first and then freeze them. Freezing a bird is inhumane. You need to make it as quick as possible.

As has been mentioned. Get double use out of them. I just save some that have been shot in other training or on a hunt. If you have a game farm close they have accidental deaths all the time and usually would be happy for someone to take some.

Freezing sounds very gruesome and I've never actually attempted it, but freezing alive is the same way they kill mice or rats or rabbits or even quail sometimes for the pet industry (snake food). I asked a pet shop worker and he said that the animal will go into a coma after it becomes numb and will be totally out when it dies. But shooting the bird on the first go around sounds better to me and I don't think I have the heart to inject anybody with anything any way. Sorry for such a gruesome post, but I thought I'd just ask. :)

What if the dog chews on the bird or eats the birds head?

My first thought was who asked the quail if the needle going into its head hurt and if rubbing alcohol that burns like mad smarts a little when it is injected?

I'm sure it would work but sure sounds like a lot of work and no less painfull than a beebee hit in the head.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Alcohol to the head? Are you serious?

Shotgun has always seemed to work fine, unless you need a science project or are practicing to be a mortician.

Aw geez.

The best thing to do is to use the birds, live, to train the dogs. Those that you shoot and kill, you freeze.

But if you want to simply kill a live bird. Break. The. Neck.

If you do not know how, find a friend who is a hunter who can show you. It is something you will need to know if you hunt. If you cannot do that, go on lcsupply or a poultry supply house and buy a "necker."

Do not rag the thing to death or inject it with chemicals.
