Whoa Post?
Whoa Post?
When using a "whoa post" what is the proper collar to use?
Re: Whoa Post?
I wonder if you can even buy the "pinch collar" of the style that Delmar used.
Re: Whoa Post?
I see Gun Dog Supply has them https://www.gundogsupply.com/leather-pinch-collars.html

Yes, but it doesn't work with a whoa post.Sharon wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 5:24 pmSeems an e collar is used by many:

Re: Whoa Post?
I believe you could also use a prong collar. Same principle, similar effect.
I don't see why it wouldn't work if that is what you already have.
I actually think an e-collar might work with the whoa post...but your timing would have to be spot on. Mine ain't that good.

Re: Whoa Post?
This would be the problem with the e-collar and the whoa post - timing. Not so much with the on button, but moreso on the release.birddogger2 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 6:17 pmI believe you could also use a prong collar. Same principle, similar effect.

I must confess I didn't watch the entirety of the video, but I did read the transcript. I didn't see anything about the use of a post - my quick take on it is that they taught whoa with the half-hitch and were now transitioning the collar as a replacement for the half hitch to enforce whoa at a distance.

I don't generally use a whoa post for steadying and the method I learned was different than the Huntsmith method you posted.
Thank you for sharing. Always nice to learn another way to get something done. One more tool for the toolbox.
Thanks again.

Re: Whoa Post?
I generally start em on a training table.
They tend to be timid on the raised platform so don't immediately jump around. Work slowly standing them and styling them up rewarding wath gentle strokes over their cape when they stand still.
The finished dogs jump up and stand on their own waiting for the bell to be put on before they get to run.
The tailgate of a pick-up works as well.

Re: Whoa Post?
I use the old Delmar Smith method with some changes. For a collar from the post to the dog I have used the pinch collar but for years now have simly used a choke collar, doesn't seem to make any difference at all. Once I have the dog going on the post I go to the yard with short stakes in the ground. Check cord around and when I can catch a stake with the dragging check cord give the "whoa" command. Catch the dog and flip the CC off the stake right away and tighten it up to be able to bump the dog if need be. When I start in the yard I also add the E collar but don't use it to soon. Doesn't take long and the dog is usually stopping very well. last few time's in the yard and I use the E collar. Low power shock and quick hit. Make the quick hit over and over till the dog stops, doesn't take long. Once I think I'm where I want to be, I quit using the stakes and the knot to bump the dog under the chin. No stakes and the E collar.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!
