Trapping feral pigeons

Post by Idylwyld » Mon May 20, 2024 12:00 pm

Thought this might be of some help. I had a lot of trouble finding pigeons. My response was to rely on myself. I catch my own.

My best "haul" has been 37 in one afternoon. I usually run 4 traps. I average 8-14 birds out of my traps ran 2-3 times a week. I have grown to prefer a 72 hour wait before pulling birds out of traps.

I try to stay a week ahead. In other words, I am catching next weeks training birds this week.
The links below describe my pigeon trapping and results.

Hopefully Some will find this useful.

After plenty of fits and starts attempting to trap feral pigeons. I struggled with listening to outright myths and plenty of nonsense on the subject. Lots of "experts".
The pigeon bob doors the homing pigeon folks like, I tried and they just do not work for trapping ferals.
I found a lot of commercial pigeon traps were made to be marketed and sold, not necessarily to actually catch pigeons. More to catch a consumer.

It is vital for my dog training to have a source of fresh feral pigeons. I define fresh as within 10-12 days. I need that constant turn over of fresh birds.
I have no interest in keeping homers. They just wont work for what I do. Ive tried.

Like a lot of things in life if you want it done, handle it yourself.

I accidentally "discovered" J clips in a Gebos farm store one day. I got all excited...

I run 4 traps and average 10-12 birds every 48-72 hours. My best haul ever was 37. Worst was.... 2.
