I want an economical way to train my GSP and DElmar Smith suggests using pigeons but I am afraid to use them casue of the dangers they pose to humans (disease). I will take care not to get myself sick, but do I have to worry about the dog? Should I prepare the birds some how spay them with something?
Thank you all in advance.

I've been using barn pigeons for 2 years now. I just buy them before I train and there gone. From what I've read when you set up a loft for homers and go into the loft is when you can pick up a disease. That comes from the dust of the droppings. Then again all you have to do is keep it clean and wear a dust mask when you go in. I have a uncle that races homers he's 89 and still at it. Not saying you can't catch something but you probably win the lotto first. Then you can pay someone to train your pup.
Illness to you is not a major problem at it would be even less for your dog. Many many dogs are trained on them and I have never heard of one getting sick.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I've kept racing pigeons and I've worked dogs using pigeons of various kinds all my life. I've never taken ill and neither have any of my dogs. The dust in pigeon lofts can so I'm told cause illness. Just like you would with any other animal, keep things clean and you'll be pretty safe.

It is rare to get anything from pigeons. If you want to be safer use homers.

jager where do you live ?
Either way will work and your chances of getting sick is 100 times greater on the street in the mids of people than you are from being in the mids of pigeons.
