Post by BigShooter » Sat Mar 08, 2008 10:11 pm

What were the ages of the youngest and oldest winners respectively?

This is just to satisfy my own curiousity. I found whelped dates for Spot, Moon, Sunny & Bud. I didn't find a whelped date for Nuke. Also, once I hit the 2002 NGSPA NC & earlier I didn't find much. To save the $$$$ per search at the AKC can anyone on the site provide whelped dates for Nuke and the older NCs?

Alternatively, is there another repository of this info other than the AKC?

Thanks,

Mark

Nuke was born 3/12/00. He was 6 when he was NC.

The youngest that I know of was "Joker" that was ran by David King. He was bred by Greg Kaiser and was later sold to Frank Alexander.

Joker won at AkC not at AF when he was 2.

Pepper,
The only dog I found in the NGSPA NC list, run by D. King was Windwalker's Desperado who took AA RU in 1996. Is this "Joker" ... or are you referring to a GSPCA AA NC? Any idea how old Joker was?

Hank,
Thanks for the info.

P.S. Anyone have whelped dates for:

Diamond R S Stephanie
Cherry Creek Rocky
Jim Kath's SinCity Siren
Heide's Mighty City Slicker
Windrow's Saddle Shoes
BMK's Strike The Gold

I'll bet someone has a collection of the event catalogs.

Dumb as I am, Joker was the youngest for the AKC and you are correct, he did not win the NGSPA.

John and Dave are to book guys here maybe they can get it.

We are letting him run with this one on his own, in the "special projects" category, to see if the kid is any good.

NGSPA AA NC 1988-2008:

The title was withheld in 1988,1991 & 2008. Youngest winner was Moon, whelped 5-11-01 and won in 2005. Oldest winner was Flash Dance Ginny, whelped 7-19-83 and won in 1992. Using the year whelped vs the year won; number of dogs - age at win were 1-4, 3-5, 6-6, 4-7, 3-8 & 1-9 with the average age at win being 6.4 years. I had to assume but was unable to verify that the NC was run at approximately the same time of year and was held at Booneville each year. If the course was not the same for at least a majority of those years it might be more difficult to compare the age at win. I wouldn't want to compare ages between different courses as it may be easier or more difficult to get a younger dog around a different course with different terrain.

Do the numbers show that the winners are getting younger or older? Not really, the last five winners won at 5,6,4,7,& 8 years of age respectively. Although this is a small sample one might conclude that dogs have been maturing at a similar rate during the past 20 years, regardless of any changes in breeding practices during this period. Also, any changes in training methods over the past 20 years do not appear to be producing generally younger or older AA winners.

That would be one at 3 (Moon won in Feb. 2005, so was about three months short of 4). Spot was 4 (two months short of 5) when he won. Don't know about the others. For all intents and purposes you can use Mar. 1 as the date of the NC, except for 2001 when there was a cancellation and the makeup was run later in the summer.

Absolutely correct. As I posted above I used year whelped compared with year of win. 14 of the 18 dogs were born Jan. - May, approximately two mos. either side of March. The four youngest winners in the sample were:

Dog...................................Whelped........Won.....Handler
1. Moon............................. 5-11-01.........2005....Rabidou
2. Jim Kath's SinCity Siren..9-20-95.........2000....Steger
3. Spot...............................4-19-02.........2007....Hongo
4. BMK's Strike The Gold.....1-10-91.........1996....Gulledge

P.S. Added the handlers. All of the big names appear to be able to help a young dog get it done.
