Heard there is a major rain delay in the OSD and the grounds are covered with water. Starting to sound like Booneville.

It's "Open To All Breeds That Count." We just shorten it to All Breed so as not to embarrass anyone else or cause any controversy.
Actually, on a serious note, it is pretty simple. It is the custom in the American Field world that the simpler the name or title, the more respect and honor it is due. So anything that needs to have a qualifier, adjective, or explanation, while it may be a wonderful thing, is not of the same level as those things that do not.

Dennis Brath called me last night and said they were moving along with 16 braces of OSD done. He said that he would make the AA in KS with no problem. I hope that has not changed since I am heading down on Tuesday.Wagonmaster wrote:The pros are going to have to start making some choices. The GPC starts in KS on Monday and it is a full day's to get there from IL.
Maybe we should all just get into Labs.
Labs? We don't need no labs. How dare you mention such a breed in the company of fine pointin' dogs.

They were moving right along HOWEVER, they ran 0 today, as they called it off due to all the rain. It is still raining (at least as of 7:30 when I talked to Robbi it was), so they lost a day and could lose another one tomorrow, so making it to KS by Mon. could be VERY tight. Now the GPC starts w/the ASD, BUT.... dogs are with pros (not all dogs, but SEVERAL) that are still at the all breed running. I would check again before I made definate plans to leave and be in KS. Randy is hoping to run Kessie in the ASD at GPC, but she may not be back from IL. She is done running, ran yesterday in the OSD, but we have 2 all age dogs still to run as well as the rest of the ones Keith and Robbi have, so.... I would check first on arrival times, as it will be AT least Wed. before OSD finishes and that is ONLY if they get to run tomorrow if not you are looking at Thurs. or Fri. and then 2 days of AA, then they still have the ASD and the derby to run.

Haha! Good stuff John! So I gather the "National German Pointing Dog Association All Breed (Amateur Shooting Dog, Open Shooting Dog, and Open All Age) Champion" has gotta be close to something on the bottom of your shoe and puts The National Champion right on par with A Hunting Dog!! Works for my world!!
(well except for the bottom of the shoe part, my hat's off to the champs of any of these deals, long name or short!!)

I talked to Barber and he felt they would not be able to run again tomorrow, ther adar shows just tons of rain comin this way. We have gotten over 6 inches here at home and it has all come through Pyramid Park to here.
Some were wanting to call it as they dogs have ran and others are against that. With my guy hurt in the Region 4 it is well with me to get the additional days of reat for him. My plans are to go over. Nothing else going on.
I think the crossing at Pyramid have to be just awful

The NGPDA has been cancelled. They have run 32 dogs in the OSD, with several more braces to be run. They are going to name a Champion and RU Ch. out of the dogs that have run so far, cancel the rest of the OSD, and cancel the entire rest of the trial. The AA (National Championship), ASD and Derby are cancelled. It is over.
The report from the Bechtel Ranch in KS, where the next NGSPA event, the Great Plains Championship is scheduled, is also not good. Lots of water everywhere and the ground is saturated. The event is still on, but our string of dogs is going to skip it this year. Going to wait for better weather when the dogs, horses, and people will not be at risk, and for the drier trials in Colorado and Idaho.

Hey John,
I spoke with Dennis B. a short while ago and he is headed home as well. We are skipping the Great Plains. Everyone is fed up with the weather and don't want to endanger anyone or any critters. Saves me some money by not having to haul my horses 600+ miles each way.

Hopefully the grounds in KS will get some drying time before Mon. sure it won't be a ton, but any will be better. Think Randy will leave Sun. afternoon to get out there for the asd. Talked to Robbi once around 6 pm and she said that Rick Heller, Jim Stafford, and Dennis were getting ready to head out. Several had pulled out already, and think the rest is pulling out in the morning. They had a final dinner at the Hunt Club tonight announced the winner and runner up.
Winner was Slick Kessie Joe handled by Keith Gulledge (scouted by Robbi, an awesome team) owned by Randy and I (and our girls Paige and Whitney who are very excited)
Runner up was George Wilson with Buzz (I don't remember Buzz's full name sorry). Buzz was also the Reg. V ASD runner up there.

Whaaaat?? Cmon!? Is it April 1st?? How can champions be named when not all the dogs have been run? Sheesh...They are going to name a Champion and RU Ch. out of the dogs that have run so far,
Congrats to the winners though for sure, that's exciting - thumbs up to Kessie and good to see George and Buzz on a roll!

The road driving into the parking lot was covered with a foot of water, the lake nearby was 12 feet highrer than normal. On the courses, there are water crossings and lots of standing water in the fields. On CNN, all of that water in SE Missouri also covered and went up to the trial area which is less than 50 miles from Cape Giradeau MO.
It was very ugly. Kessie must have been really good as Council Mountain Buzzsaw had 5 finds and has been winning everything this spring.
I guess George's plan in Georgia of guiding is working very well for Buzz.

Oh no doubt Jerry, it sounds like the conditions were horrible and cancelling made the most sense. I just don't see how a champion can be named when all the entrants had not had their turn to compete. I could see maybe turning it into a club stake or something like that, "maybe", but I'd never name a champion as a judge until all the dogs entered competed or scratched...maybe the remaining dogs/handlers agreed to scratch?? No doubt Kessie and Buzz had great performances but it ain't over till they all run IMO!
Just a wierd year from what it sounds like so far...judges judging and putting up their own dogs, withholding Nat'l Ch's, cancelling Nat'ls stakes to go to Reg. stakes, awarding Ch's when all the dogs haven't run...?? FT wierdness!!

Been to Georgia, Arkansas and Illinois and none of it has been good. Bad or poor judging in several places. I heard that Buzz was rweally good in Illinois and he has been hot. I guess we will have to keep him in Idaho.
Nice dog though.
The allage at the nationals was a whole different deal, previous winners were in the parking lot and not entered, I suppose because of the judge and what he does and or did. I suppose that I was the stupid one for entering and running with that in mind. Will not ever do that again or go back to Boonville again as well.
So much cover that I really do not know how you could run more than a gun dog. I will send you the pictures. LB has ran his last allage east of the mississippi, find toooo many birds for these guys.

Doug~ The reason the Nationals at Booneville were called because they had horriable ice storms and that the club house and surrounding buildings had NO Electric plus wanted everyone as well as the dogs and horses to be safe as well. The Booneville NGSPA Nationals being called had NOTHING to do with the Region 5 Championships and wasn't called because it might of gotten ran over a little bit. (IMHO the Nationals are 10 x's as important as the Regional/Species Championships).
As for the All Breed naming a National SD and runner up champion, the committee called Bernie Mathis at American Field and he said they had ran 32 dogs (still had 11 left to run) but the judges had dogs of quality value runs that they felt were National caliber so they went ahead and named the NSDC & runner up from that. The committee had also gone around to all the other trainer/handler/owners and polled everyone as well. I too would of liked to of seen what those other 11 dogs could of possiably done but then you go back to the weather. We'd had 12" of rain in 24 hrs. , the cut/plowed grain fields that we'd been running in were now running and knee deep (on horses) in mud, plus the 2-3 water crossings on the courses that were now over belly deep on horses, then add the coldness from the rain and wind. They looked at it from the point that they had almost finished the NSD stake and didn't have any death tolls/injury tolls on animals or people so they called it. Yes, it's a shame and we hated to see it all called as we owners/trainers/handlers as well as the organizations themselves had A LOT OF EXPENSES PUT OUT for these events but you can't control the weather and what happens from that.
Anyway, thanks for all the congrats. Kessie had an awesome race with 4 finds and a back (one of the finds being on a wild covey). Buzz & George also did a wonderful job. Congrats to them as well and we're looking forward to seeing them when we get down to Eureka in a day or two for the NGSPA Great Plains Championships. We'll be down there in a couple days.
Everyone take care and best wishes in the rest of the spring trials. I'll post pictures of Kessie as soon as we get them done, didn't get them taken down there due to all the weather and wanting to get on the road back to home yesterday as well as I had to get back to go visit my nice chiropractor (my cyatic (??) nerve caught/locked on me Wednesday morning so went in this morning for a work over and have to go back Monday morning and will see where my back is at then.)
Later and have a great Easter weekend all~

Thanks Robbi for the info!! I wondered if someone might have made a call to Bernie to ask what to do or what would be acceptable. I imagine alot would hinge on the remaining handlers ageeing or officially scratching their dogs. Sounds like it was handled perfectly - shoulda known!!
Congrats - very cool, gotta come watch your dogs one of these days and see how to do it right!
