I know you and I have talked a little about the R2 before Rob. It is the oldest if not the oldest of all the GSP Championships. My research at the Field dated it back to the early 60's, but I talked to John Steger about it at Booneville and he says it dates back to about 1954. That must have been prior to any association of the NGSPA with the American Field, or at least prior to the authorization for a Championship by the Field.
The original name was the Mid-Atlantic Championship, it started out as strictly a Shooting Dog Championship, and it was so far back in the development of the breed that there were a number of years early on when they could not name a champion. The dogs mostly could not make it around for the hour, and if they could, they couldn't stay broke.
The early records show that Tommy Schwartfeger, John Merrill, Mr. Steger, and quite a few of the best names in shorthairs ran in that event at that time. Gary Nehring from here in Minn. flew out in '79 or '80 with his great dog, Ammertals Boss Ranger, and won it. He must have been in his 20's or early 30's at the time. Steger won it at about the same age, in 1969 I believe.
Things have sure changed. Good luck, you are continuing a very long tradition.

John, that is very interesting history on the R2. I'm glad you had the chance to visit AF and find all of this information. Amazing to see how far these dogs have come!
Just curious if you know when the R1 was last held. I was up in CT for the Nutmeg GSP trial this weekend and there were talks about starting the R1 again next year. That would be great since there aren't many championships here in the east.
