Callback Question

Post by Chief_dog » Mon Nov 10, 2008 1:48 pm

Let's see what you think about this situation I heard about last night. They plant birds in different spots for each dog in the callback for the retreive. Dog locks up on a pile of feathers where the bird for the last dog was planted, so handler collars the dog off and releases. Dog then points the bird put out for him, makes the retrieve, all manners in order. Then the dog is tossed because the judges say the handler couldn't collar the dog off the feather pile.

A couple things I thought were odd about the situation. First, in every callback I've ever seen, they always plant the bird in the same spot for each dog. Second, wouldn't you collar a dog off a non-productive on the regular course? So why wouldn't it be allowed in a callback?

They ended up withholding first place in the stake, and awarding 2nd through 4th after that dog was tossed. 2nd place dog still got two points since it was a five point major. The whole situation just seems VERY strange to me.

I would never throw a dog out for that. It would be a total non-event and would have no effect on the placements.

This situation sounds very strange to me as well. You heard this secondhand and did not see it? I want to think we're missing some details, to be perfectly honest.

Yes, it's second hand information. I just thought it seemed really strange to me.

First of all the callback is to judge ONLY for steadiness to wing and shot. It is not to judge on the dog going out and finding the bird. I wouldn't have thrown the dog out. The bird should have also been planted exactly where the other bird was planted to be fair to every dog involved. Something doesnt sound right.

Was the call back for a kill and retreive??????You dont normally call back for a kill in a trial unless you are judging the retreive !!!!! Yes i would ignore the collaring of the dog. It dosnt hurt to turn to the judge in that situation and ask , what do you want me to do?? Was this a hunt test or akc trial???

Oh you know what I mean!

I do hate though when I see a handler directing the dog in to the planted bird. To me that is all wrong!

Quite honestly, I'll take that over waiting 10 minutes while the handler hacks the dog back in. The situation is already so artificial, how the dog gets to the bird and points it is immaterial, IMHO.
