I am new to this and have a few questions so excuse my ignorance.
What age is the puppy class for?
Is this something could just bring my pup to and watch?
I would love to come and check it out and get my pup the experience.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Troy

AKC Regulations
Puppy Stake (Open and/or Amateur Walking) for dogs six months of age and under fifteen months of age on the first advertised day of the trial (e.g. a dog whelped on January 30, 1989 would not be eligible for entry in a Puppy stake at a trial which starts on April 30, 1990). Horseback handling is not permitted in Amateur Walking Puppy stakes.
PUPPY STAKES. Puppies must show desire to hunt, boldness, and initiative in covering ground and in searching likely cover. They should indicate the presence of game if the opportunity is presented. Puppies should show reasonable obedience to their handlers' commands, but should not be given additional credit for pointing staunchly. Each dog shall be judged on its actual performance as indicating its future as a high class bird dog. Every premium list for a licensed or member trial shall state whether or not blanks are to be fired in a Puppy Stake. If the premium list states that blanks will be fired, every dog that makes game contact shall be fired over if the handler is within reasonable gun range. At least 15 minutes and not more than 30 minutes shall be allowed for each heat.

Hope to see you there
Ron

Troy,
The best way to get a feel for what trials are all about , is come come and check one out. I would bring your pup along too, it would be nice to meet him/her. In order to run your pup, you might want to read up up a little and watch a few braces (running of two dogs on the course). If you come on down, there are a bunch of us that will be there and would be glad to show you around, and answer any questions you might have. As far as watching, you can see the beginning and the end of each brace , but without a horse it's tough to follow the entire course. You can still see a lot and learn a lot without the horse. Hope to see you down there.

Troy,
I must clarify ....the puppy & Derby stakes , you can walk in the gallery. This way you are able to follow an entire brace.

The best way to understand what happens in puppy stakes is to partake. In puppy it's mostly the natural ability of the dog that is under judgement. At this trial there is an amateur walking stake where the handlers are on foot and I'm sure if you let them know this is your first time there will be many people willing to explain what goes on and give you a hand. I think the best way to start out is getting out and letting your puppy run and both of you having fun and see what happens. That way you get a first hand view of what's going on and go from there. Remember the most important thing about this is for you and your dog to have fun and enjoy time in the field.

The GSPCI also has a wrangler on the grounds so handlers or guests can rent a horse to run their dog or just come out to view what goes on.

Got the premium from Kent in the mail and I've been wanting to attend this trial for a while but have other obligations this year. Will keep it on my watch list for next year though.

The GSPCI trial is this weekend. Looks like some of that rain we are supposed to get might arrive over the weekend. Anyone from here planning on being there? If so, post it up. :)
