Off To 4-Lakes in Portage, WI
All,
I'm off to the 4-Lakes Trial in Portage, WI to see my pup run.
He did well last week but took a couple of steps when a bird flushed in his face. Typical young dog stuff.
If you're there, look me up and say "Hi".

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Greg
I'm sure Dixon has the pup already to go. Can't ask for better weather in this neck of the woods for dog stuff.
I'm heading up to Little Falls for a HT and trying to get a couple of MH legs on Boomer.
Good luck, have safe travel, and a good time. Someday we will probably stumble into one another at a trial.

Not bad Pear, not bad at all. Tell us a little about it if you have time.

He ran over a bird pretty much during the breakaway. So, Greg picked him up.
He's made great progress on the race, though. He's going to be knocking on the door in every trial he goes to. It's just a matter of time.
Met Dennis Pierce while I was there.

Hi Gregg,
Do you know any of the results? I would be interested in checking them out.
Thanks
Terry

The open gundog was won by ruth blank it was an interesting stake, with the call backs lasting almost an hour!
The am gun dog was won by tim zick's dog vegas,it was raining the whole day on sunday.
I got my run off boise around the course(with richard walters scouting)
and ended up with boises first time around in a trial, and his first placement,a 4th.
I meet greg at the trial, but I was very busy, with scouting and running a couple of service calls on sat.I am sorry to say I was not the best host,as I was trying to do too many things to spend any time with greg.

We gotta find a different name for him than "bleep,"
one that works on the board. "Bleep" is one he would appreciate though.
There was a post on a board a little bit ago that Timmy passed away. That was Ruth's dog, and the sire of mine. Was wondering if anyone heard whether it is accurate.
Greg, am glad you liked the course. It is one of the best for AKC trials in the upper midwest.

Grounds/Course:
I liked the grounds as well as any that I’ve been to. They’re pretty open and from horseback you can see well. I was told that the visibility is even better in the Spring. I only rode the OGD and some of the derby. The course that we were on was pretty nice. I liked that when we turned, it wasn’t too sharp.
Facility:
The facility is pretty nice. Heat/AC, flush toilet. Running water for dogs and horses. It’s easy to get to from I-39/90/94 via paved roads except for the driveway and that is well-maintained gravel.
Organization:
The trial was well run. Everything started pretty much on time and was kept moving. The dog wagon was always at the other side on time. Everything seemed to flow well.
Accommodations/Etc:
I stayed at the Comfort Suites. I recommend it. It is South of the Interstate and very close to the trial grounds. The only downside is that the 6 AM breakfast wasn’t out by 6:30 when I left to help tack up horses, etc. I ate at the Hitching Post in Portage both Fri and Sat night. The Friday night fish special was very good. It’s one exit further North on I-39 from the trial exit (Hwy 33) then left and another left on country road CX. There are Wendy’s (and the ever-necessary Wal-Mart) at the *next* exit North.
Route:
If you’re going up from IN, OH and such, avoid the Gary/Chicago route. I went up that way this time to check it out and it was a disaster. I came back via I-39 South through Bloomington, I-74 East to Indy, etc. I made it back in 7 hrs 50 mins. One toll booth, no traffic. While I was there, George Quisenberry (sp?) told me about another route, I-39 S to I-80 E to I-57 S to Rt 17 E (turning into Rt 10 in IN) to I-65 S. I’ll try it next time. I had to have a predictable route this time to make it back for my son’s 1 PM soccer game.
Summary:
A good trial. I’ll be back and will bring the family.
