American Quail Classic, FL Open, International Endurance

AMERICAN QUAIL CLASSIC
Hopkinsville, KY—The American Quail Classic, sponsored by the Clarksville Pointer and Setter Club, was brought to a successful conclusion the first day after the New Year (2007) at the Fort Campbell Kentucky Military Reservation. Thirty-six canine athletes were properly entered.

For the second year in a row, Larry Huffman emerged as the winning handler with Whippoorwill Firebox, pointer female in the ownership of Earl Connolly of Memphis, TN. Firebox was smoothly handled during her hour, rendering an attractive all-age race that culminated with an excellent find.

A strong challenge came from Solid Hilltopper, pointer male owned and handled by John Russell of Bowling Green, KY. “Hoss” presented an excellent all-age race coupled with two good finds. Third was Survivor’s Little Bill, owned and handled by Blake Kukar of Collierville, TN. The pointer male had a good race and an excellent dug-up find.

The Derbies were placed on their ground performance. First was awarded to Chief Honcho’s Pogo, owned and handled by the writer; second was Cotton Plant, owned by Steve Patterson of New Albany, MS, and handled by Randy Downs. Touch’s Hardtack was third for owner-handler Keith Wright of Covington, IN.

Judges for the All-Age were Harold Ray, Waynesboro, GA, and David Hendricks, Russellville, KY. John Russell helped David Hendricks judge the Derby.

CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Greenville, FL—The 2007 Continental trials began January 15 at Dixie Plantation near Greenville, FL. The Derby Championship drew 36 dogs. The winner emerged in Strut, pointer male owned and handled by Tommy Davis of Albany, GA. Runner-up was Sharp Shooter, pointer male owned by Dr. Lester and Ruthann Littell of Marion Junction, AL, handled by Roy Epp.

Judging the Derby are Tim Miles of Beachton, GA, and Don Price of Bryceville, FL.

The Continental Championship has an even 100 dogs. Judges are Garland Priddy of Terry, MS, and Jerry Black of Jackson, MS.

FLORIDA OPEN ALL-AGE CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake City, FL—Funseeker’s Rebel, white and liver pointer male handled by Fred Dileo for owners Frank and Mercy Fonseca of Miami, FL, won the Flordia Open Championship in a deep and forward three-find effort in the one-hour finals. Runner-up was House’s Snake Bite with three finds and a smooth race. The white and lemon pointer male was handled by Andy Daugherty for owner Tom Faller of Springfield, IL. One hundred and nine dogs were entered in this 2007 renewal; one was scratched.

Judges were Harry Gillmore of Murphysboro, IL, and Leland Fischer of Jefferson City, MO. They called back ten dogs for the one-hour finals, i.e.: House’s Snake Bite and Buzzsaw’s Stormy Maggie; Rowan’s Gunsmoke and Pride’s Alibi; the winner and Chickasaw Bud (named top qualifier for a thrilling three-find forty minutes); South’s Late Night and Broadway’s Silver Belle; and Solid Power and Flatwood Silver.

Birds were plentiful, the Chinquapin Farm grounds at Lake City, FL, were in ideal condition, and the weather cooperated for one of the best trials anyone could remember.

INTERNATIONAL ENDURANCE SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP

Ardmore, OK—The International Endurance Shooting Dog Championship was concluded January 11 at Lake Murray near Ardmore, OK. The winner was Rock Acre Dreamgirl, white and liver pointer female which also won this stake in 2006. Dreamgirl had four letter-perfect finds and a consistent hard-hunting race. Dreamgirl is owned by Ric Peterson of Gilbert, AZ, and handled by George Newcomb. Runner-up laurels went to San Jacinto Drifton, white and black pointer male owned by Lester Shepard of Conroe, TX, and handled by Frank Ford. Drifton had two finds coupled with a steady up-front race. There were 28 entries.

The judges were Preston Trimble of Norman, OK, and Harold Davis of Poolville, TX.

MIDWESTERN STATES SHOOTING DOG FUTURITY

Ardmore, OK—The Twenty-First Midwestern States Shooting Dog Futurity concluded January 6 around noontime at the Lake Murray venue near Ardmore, OK.

The winner was Broadway Bumblebee, pointer female owned by Jim Blackwood of Edinboro, PA, and handled by C. W. “Chuck” Taylor. Bumblebee was outstanding with one find in the initial series and two finds in the hour finals. Second was Mist’s Trailblazin Taco, pointer female owned and handled by Travis Wier of San Angelo, TX. Third place was awarded to Gailen’s Lotto Kipp, pointer male owned and handled by Gailen E. Cooper of Oak Grove, MO. Fargo’s Limited Edition, pointer male owned by Linda Smith of Bennett, CO, and handled by Chuck Taylor, rounded out the placements with fourth. All the winners had bird work. There were 14 entries.

The judges for this 21st running were as advertised — Dr. Pat McInteer of Falls City, NE, and Preston Trimble of Norman, OK, presiding.

GEORGIA DERBY CHAMPIONSHIP

Waynesboro, GA—Two pointer males captured premier honors at the 2006 Georgia Derby Championship at Waynesboro, GA. Judges Luke Eisenhart of Glenville PA, and Shawn Kinkelaar of Effingham, IL, named Erin’s Bad River champion and Strut runner-up from an entry of 30 pointers and two setters.

Bad River had excellent composure and perfect manners on his two pieces of bird work for owner-handler Sean Derrig of Bannockburn, IL. Strut had several nice casts and good bird work for owner-handler Tommy Davis of Albany, GA.

GEORGIA SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP

Waynesboro, GA—The Georgia Shooting Dog Derby Classic commenced January 10 at Waynesboro, GA, the juvenile stake drawing a field of 24 starters. Judges are Terrell Harpe of Blythe, GA, and Burton Bryant of Royston, GA.

The Georgia Shooting Dog Championship has attracted a mammoth field of 136 entries for Judges Bobby Fox of Rome, GA, and Dr. Aubrey F. Morgan of Suffolk, VA.

GEORGIA OPEN QUAIL CHAMPIONSHIP

Waynesboro, GA—The Georgia Quail Championship began January 5 at Waynesboro, GA, with John Ray Kimbrell of Fort Mill, SC, and J. C. Turner of Casar, NC, in the judicial saddles. They watched 54 entries, and the runing was concluded January 9.

They named as winner House’s Smoke Signal, white and liver pointer male owned by D. A. Morris of Vidalia, GA, and handled by Keith Martin. King Cotton, owned by Jimmy Honea of Oakfield GA, was runner-up. The white and orange pointer male was handled by Robin Gates.

HOBART AMES MEMORIAL TRIALS

Grand Junction, TN—The Hobart Ames Open All-Age Stake has drawn 44 contenders, and the Open Derby, 11, for the running at Ames Plantation, Grand Junction, TN. Judges are Larry Garner of Oak Point, TX, and Jim Crouse of Dixon, KY.

NATIONAL OPEN SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP

The National Open Shooting Dog Championship is scheduled to commence Monday morning, February 5, at the Robert Gordon “Sandhills” grounds near Hoffman, NC. Full particulars regarding the trial appeared in the December 23-30 issue, but a clarification regarding qualified dogs is in order.

All dogs that earned Purina Top Shooting Dog Award points in 2005 and 2006 are eligible to be entered the evening of February 3. The drawing will be held at the clubhouse on the field trial grounds. Please see the aforementioned December 23-20 issue, page 2, for added particulars.

SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIP

Columbus, MS—The 53rd running of the Southern Championship at Columbus, MS, attracted a field of 43 contenders for Judges Mike Norris of Furman, AL, and Brian Spear of Lowndesboro, AL.

Four dogs were initially called back for the two-hour finals: House’s Cold Mountain with Colvin Davis, Poison, handled by Myres Gray, Shell Creek Coin, Steve Hurdle, and Erin’s Bad River, Sean Derrig. They placed four dogs — Shadow’s Tennessee Girl (Blake Kukar) and Lester’s Snowatch (Gary Lester); Sir Lancelot (Hoyle Eaton) and Clowers Thunder Strike (Davis) — on standby.

The first four callback dogs were run in the two-hour finals, and the first brace of stand-bys also competed, after which the judges named Shell Creek Coin the winner. The white and orange pointer male is owned by R. W. “Bud” Moore of Catherine, AL, and was handled by Steve Hurdle. No runner-up was named.

GEORGIA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waynesboro, GA— The Georgia Open Derby Championship has drawn a field of 32 contenders, and the Georgia Open All-Age Championship has an entry of 54 for the 2007 renewal at Waynesboro, GA. Judges for the juvenile fixture are Luke Eisenhart of Glenville, PA, and Shawn Kinkelaar of Effingham, IL. For the all-age, John Ray Kimbrell of fort Mill, SC, and J. C. Turner of Casar, NC, will preside.
