Why isn't the Amateur Gun Dog a retrieving stake? I thought GSP's needed four amateur retrieving points to earn their AFC, and if I remember correctly, they can use those points for their AFC.

To finish an AFC yes you need four retrieving points. And AFC points cross over the FC title. The AGD is non retrieving in the spring because we usually have a group of Irish Setter people that come to this trial. Our fall AGD is retrieving, and we may look to have the spring AGD retrieving in the future for the GSP's.

How many points are neede to finish FC? Is there a place where you can link to learn more about the "point system". Have have looked but have not been able to find a definitive site. Thanks,

The point system is in the AKC rules:

You need 10 points to finish an AFC or a FC title. Four of the points must be retrieving points. Some points will cross over from Amateur to Open. You can find more info on AKC about the point system. The comment before mine holds a link where you can find that info I think.

For the breeds that require retrieving points.

To finish FC , for example, are the 10 points accumulated from Puppy, Derby, OGD, etc. or is is for 1 division/1 year? Would my points from last fall's Derby wins count toward my FC this year?
This aspect seems confusing with the different levels and such. Gotta learn it at some point! Thanks for all the info so far.

10 points are accumulated over the entire career of the dog. It is not just for one year. Puppy & Derby points count towards the FC, but check AKC for the specifics.

The following below was taken right from the AKC rule book on field trial rules.
"At present a dog of one of the Pointing Breeds will
be recorded a Field Champion after having won 10
points under the point rating schedule below in regular
stakes in at least three licensed or member field
trials, provided that 3 points have been won in one 3
point or better Open All-Age, Open Gun Dog, Open
Limited All-Age, or Open Limited Gun Dog Stake,
that no more than 2 points each have been won by
placing first in Open or Amateur Walking Puppy
and Open or Amateur Walking Derby Stakes, and
that no more than 4 of the 10 points have been won
by placing first in Amateur Stakes;"

Got it! Thanks for all the info on the how the points system works. Accumulating them is one thing, but knowing which points work for which level are important.

Tim talked with the DNR and it is a GO. We checked it out Sun and there is enough dry course for us to use. The water has gone down alot!! There is supposed to be some rain 80% chance Tues and then nice the rest of the week so far with only 20-30% chance of rain later in week. We are looking forward to having the trial. :D :D :!:

Chicago area got the brunt of the rain from what we could tell when we checked radar on the Weatherbug. We didn't get alot up here. But we did run in a Weim trial at Ottawa grounds yesterday and did so in the rain, but it was dry by 11am/12pm.

If I remember right, lucky ran by joe vicari won the limited,Jack marchese with howie won the am gundog,
while the all age win was withheld, with a 2nd place given to beamer.(we did have two acceptable all age runs, but neither made it through the call back, dennis braths dog snapped at a bird, and my eva dropped the bird short of me in the call back.)
The puppy was won by rick heller, dont rememberthe pups name.
I do not remember the open winner,I do know 4th was withheld.
I am sure someone can fill in the blanks, and tell me if I remember the limited correctly.

I think the pup's name was Rizz
I do not remember the open winner
Tom Tubergen won with Dew

Tha Amateur Gun Dog ended up being a 4-pointer. With 20 dogs in need of retrieving points drawn, it would have still been a 4-pointer if the ONE Irish Setter had stayed home.

I'm haven't seen many Irish Setters that are good running dogs, but I will say this...that was ONE HECK OF A NICE IRISH... big running and a little crazy, but a dog with ALOT of potential! I have nothing against that IRISH! Ed Liermann has a nice dog on his hands!

And next year, just so everyone knows our club will be holding all Open and Amateur RET stakes at the Pine Island Grounds spring and fall. Just to give a history behind our reason we've had NON RET Amateur is this...When we've held our spring trial in past we've had regular attendees of about 20+ entries from Irish Setters. That has been a great help to our total entry count. The fall trial has always been RET for Open/ AM stakes. This spring our group of Irish Setters couldn't make it, and we've decided that since we are a GSP club that we should be offering stakes for the full benefit of our GSPs. Just in case anyone was wondering.
