Benelli's Bird Hunter reminder for interested!

Post by tfbirddog2 » Mon Jul 07, 2008 7:00 pm

For those who are interested next Monday July 14th at 11 am CST. and than again on Thursday at 6:30pm and 11 pm CST A.B.H. will be on and be featuring when they were at the lodge where I guide for.Hope it is good and everyone enjoys it. It is only on the Outdoor Channel, but I do believe they show them on ESPN too sometimes.I think my friend that guided the hunt for Tom and Scott, was using a Brit,EP and GSP Ithink so most everybodies feeling wont be hurt.

We just checked it out. (Rick having lived and hunted in Az for years and used to be in the club) really enjoyed it. WOW, best dog work I have EVER seen on a birdhunting show!!!

OK! I watched it.

This is my take, for what it's worth.

I saw dogs BUSTING BIRDS.
I saw dogs CREEPING.
I saw STOLEN RETRIEVES.
I saw dogs RUNNING OVER BIRDS.
I saw a Lab who could use some TRAINING and MANORS
I saw one nice POINT.
I saw lots of BIRDS SHOT.
I saw A BEAUTIFUL lodge , BEAUTIFUL COVER.
I saw more of a SHOOT then a HUNT.

yeah the place was beautiful and looks like an awesome place to hunt. i recorded it on my dvr and have watched it a couple of times. American gun dog was really good too those gsp's were impressive how steady they were. but i dont really agree with your take on the dog work i thought they did fine though yes the lab did get a little excited but isnt it only like a two year old dog its still got time.

I thought I saw a BRIT, VIZSLA, POINTER, GSP. The only dog that looked solid to me was the POINTER and even he broke and flushed. They all were steady to a point but all broke and flushed.
I guess it is what you expect from your dog. I do the flushing, not my dog.
As for the LAB. How much time does it take. She messed up a lot by busting in on some of those dogs. I would not hunt with a flushing dog even if it meant loosing out on a TV show. But thats just me.

You probably never saw the OUTDOOR LIFE net. show that feautured Delmar Smith,me and my dogs. It was flimed in TX.
I, or my dog had never hunted Quail,( we don't have quail to hunt) but in an hour and a half my female, GWP, ELKE, found, pointed and held to flush, 6 (wild bird) coveys. I have a copy of that show.

Every hunter knows what they expect from their dog. I for one, expect close to perfection from mine.

I guess I saw the wrong show. The one I saw was in Az hunting wild birds with the Pointing Dog Club. Very nice shorthairs! I guess we saw American Gundog on Outdoor Channel which was Eastern time...OOOPS.

Snips is talking about American Gundog, and Birddog is talking about the Benelli's American BirdHunter. I agree with the Birddog on the lab. All you hear from Tom Knapp is no Sophie, no, no, no. Its good to see lots of birds in a certain area, but that was crazy, all the birds going everywhere. I seen where some birds flushed from this certain area. The cameraman had a good shot at these birds and when you saw the dogs come into view some of the birds didn't even until the dogs were right on top of them.

Rick had it taped and thought it looked like a good preserve hunt, lots of birds and lots of shooting. At a preserve many times they are preferring the dogs flush the birds because they get up better. He said it looked like good cover and easy walking. Tom Knapp is great to watch.

Regardless, preserve or wild, it was sloppy dog work. Even Tom Knapp had trouble hitting the real thing. :o

yea like 3 different people were watching a different show i saw "american gun dog" and "american bird hunter" on american bird hunter none of the dogs were steady at all. on American Gun Dog the Gsp's were amazingly steady they didnt flinch even on flush shot and fall they stayed thier until released now tahts good dog work those mearns quail are pretty too.

As for what it is worth I still havent watched yet friends wife deleted the setup fro todays. As for the dog work Lab was Knapps,if you saw a Visala it was Carlsons, the other dogs were the guides, so I cant say anything about the lab.As for the other dog work in all, none of us use steady, wing to flush, pointless with clients that wound birds everytime out the quicker your dog can get to a bird that still has legs without being waited to be sent the better.WE dont use any flushing labs that are not trained to walk by us then, be sent on flush.I guess one guy does have "steady to wing" dogs but he is a full time trainer, trialer and guide too. For Tom on birds he will tell you the difference clays and live birds, he knows where the clay is going when He throws it verses a bird at free roam.Thats about it till I see the show. For a shoot than a hunt it is from day to day and the next day we got a front that sprinkled about 2 to 4 inches of dust which why my boss told me there was birds all over that bottom the whole day they shot.

I just watched it myself. I dvr that and all upland huting shows on the Outdoor Channel along with Tournament Hunter. That looked like a fantastic place to hunt quail and they didnt even show the pheasant hunting but they did speak about it some. Sounds like a great place to go for a 2 or 3 species hunt. I saw Tom Knapp shoot a chukar there too I believe. How about the work of that Brittany? I am not a huge fan of Britts but that dog was amazing for a 14 year old dog. Also, what a darn nice looking English Pointer they had.

Thanks, Tommy and the others that thought the lodge and ground looked nice(forgot to say that), we take pride in natrual cover hunting no mowed strips, we have food plots but thats it all the rest is as the ground lays.As for hunting with us we are really decently priced for packages we do have kennels so you can bring your own dogs. For that britt my buddy didnt explain to clearly he has had her for 14yrs she was about 3 when the guy gave him to her that little dog is heel on wheels for pheasents too.Yes, you saw chuckar too.

So she is 17 rather than 14? Holy cow that dog really is heck on wheels. It is amazing she is still alive much less hunting especially as energetic as she is. That just goes to show a regimine of exercise, hunting, and a good diet is a real benefit.

Those guys are from the club (Arizona Pointing Dog Club) I joined a couple months ago. They said the editors had called them several times during the development process and said that was going to be on of the best shows they ever produced. It sounds like they will be back to tape again this year. Hopefully I will get to join in.

I will probably see the show on tape up at the trial this weekend.

Regardless of the dogwork in my opinion the whole show has suffered with Tim Knapp at the helm. The General was a way better host IMO, you never seen him hunting pen raised released birds, I cannot remember ever seeing him hunt nothing but wild birds.

Was that the one in AZ hunting for mearns quail or the one in texas for bob white and blue quail with all the springers, eps, a lab and a setter or was it a different one?

watched the show and thought it was pretty good, its not often you see ol knapp out there shooting at wild birds  , thats why i usually watch american gun dog. the dogs were not 100% steady but did hold long enough to offer good shots, imo thats all you need from a good hunting dog. the dogs really worked well with the exception of knapp's DEAF lab, she always gets in the mix to screw up good dog work. i was impressed when i thought the britt was 14, but 17, wow i can only hope my katie will be hunting like that at 17. nice grounds, i enjoyed the show.

About the only dog I ever saw The General hunt was a britt he called Peaches. But he did hunt alot of blues and bobs in NM AZ and Texas. He was a good down to earth bird dog guy that could shoot wild birds better than Knapp!
