AKC-FT Rules Question
I've already searched the AKC site and couldn't find an answer to my question. I'll call them next week. In the meantime, maybe someone here knows?
Q: May a club publish a closing date on an open-ended championship?
Let me explain. It was always my understanding that if a premium lists exact dates for a trial (and '#of entries accepted depends on # of dogs that can be run in daylight hours'), then they can/should list a closing date in the premium. However, if the premium states that the trial runs "until conclusion," meaning we will take and judge all comers for as long as it takes, that they CANNOT insist on a closing date for entries.
A second question would be, if it is acceptable to list a closing date on an open-ended trial, must it concur with the drawing date? Or is it acceptable to close a trial 3 weeks before the drawing?
TIA

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
This is my belief. They may not limit number of entries but they can list a closing date which no entries will be accepted afterward. Closing date does not have to be same as drawing date. Brittany nationals are closed and drawn well before the starting date.It is sometimes helpful to know what brace you are in ahead of time when the stake takes 6 or 7 days to run.

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
They can publish a closing date of their election, as long as it is in the premium. I can think of no reason to have the closing at the same time as the drawing.

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
We can't limit entries for the VCA NFC, NAFC, or NGDC - all qualified entries MUST be accepted. But there is still a closing date.

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
I think that there can be a closing date but you can't limit the amount of entries.

You can set the total number of entries for the trial and/or the total number of entries per stake. I see it all the time on AKC-approved premiums.

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
I think the original question was regarding championships, not normal weekend trials. In most championships, or at least in the VCA championships, you can not limit the number of entries accepted. You can set the total number of entries for the trial and/or the total number of entries per stake. I see it all the time on AKC-approved premiums.

Re: AKC-FT Rules Question
Aline,
I think you need to define your question better.
Yes I believe the AKC will allow a closing date for a "open-ended championship." I fact the Gordon Setter club publishes a date by which the entries need to be at the secretary. GSCA currently is 1 month before the NFC. That allows for the catalog to be printed.
I disagree with the month ahead time frame, but my opinion doesn't hold much weight.
