NGSPA Sharptail Championships

Post by Hotpepper » Tue Jul 21, 2009 5:10 pm

Srarts on September 1 to conclusion in the state of Montana near Ekalaka and is at the same location as past years. Looks like the judging crew is very good and this should be a very good championship.

Not planning on going myself but someone has me down to scribe the entire thing. Might be hard to do from Indiana.

Jerry

Suck it up, load the motorhome and make the journey. Your scribe skills will greatly be apperciated by those of us not in attendance this year.

A couple of years from now when these two of mine are broke, I'll make the journey to Ekalaka. But until then we need a great scribe in attendance.

Eldon is going to be there Richy, and I am going to try to come for at least a day or two. Maybe run in the Am., although right now I am nursing some sore ribs. Motorist on a cell phone hit me on my bicycle and at least one is cracked. How ignominius! It should at least have been a horse.

Just talked to someone out at the champioship and they have 60 yes 60 shooting dogs for sure, he said this will run long and then most everyone is going directly to the chicken right from there to the sand hills after this championship. He said that the chicken could be even bigger and if so will definatly hurt the Omaha trial at branched oaks as it will run right into those dates with that many dogs. I know allot had planned on attending both the chicken as well as the Branched oak trial but with this many dogs and maybe more at the chicken it doesnt look like it will happen, might have to decide between the two especially if you still need to get dogs qualified for the nationals.

That is great that they such a big turnout of SD. Short last year but good this year. Wonderful.

The chicken is slated for the start on the 9th, will be close.

That doesnt include the all age as well as the amt shooting dog, they most likely wont be having a derby classic with this many dogs. Does the amt run first at the sand hills, if so I would have time to go to the Omaha trial to other wise I dont want to pay entries and have them drawn and end up still at the championship because it runs over like it most likley will.

If you have your dog with a pro, talk to your pro to find out what they are going to do. Some people will go to the AKC's this time of year in preference to the Championships, because they are trying to qualify dogs for Eureka. Some people prefer the Championships because their dogs are all qualified, or just because.

I am sure all the pros have some of each that both need qualified and yet some that already are. Mike make for a easier trial to qualify if all the pros and most of the dogs are at the championship. Usually that Omaha trial is huge with 40 to 50 gun dogs but this might be the time to sneek in and grab a win or a placement just to qualify.

I was told by Bobbi Richardson (Prairie Wind Kennels) whose husband Keith and trainer Dennis Brath are out there that they drew 61 OSD. Still in the 60's and still alot of dogs. Anyone heard how it's going up there??? Jerry, John???? Curious too as to how many and who all of them will show at the NGSPA Greater Prairie Chicken in a week. Keith & I will be heading up to Killiams and the Lee Ranch bright and early first thing Sunday am.

Heard yesterday that is was extemly warm and the dogs were struggling and most picked up, it was supposed to cool off again by late today and friday. From what I here most if not all the Pros are going to the chicken as they will be done and out of there because the amt shooting dog is last to run up there.

Bill
They typically draw the night before the stake runs and its very very rare to ever see a running order posted for most of the NGSPA Championships.

Bill

Call Dennis if they have cell service out there, they would or could give you a running order.

Not much infomation makes it away from the grounds I am afraid.

If they actually have a clubhouse for the particular stake, the running order will usually be posted there. But it is the original, the big sheet that the braces and names are entered on when the stake is drawn. It is uncommon for there to be typewritten copies to hand out, or for the order to be on the Internet anywhere. The stake is drawn the night before, and at the trial grounds no one has a way to put together copies or Internet posts.

Someone who is there can maybe read it for you, or tell you what brace your dog is in, when the brace is likely to run, and what dog you are braced with.

Bill,

Bandit has already run per my brother. There are apparently three continuous courses with no groundwater on course 1. Course 1 is the one Bandit drew. I was told it took eight gallons of water, but Bandit made the hour. Unfortunately he did not have a find. From what I understand roughly 1/3 of the dogs are being picked up, roughly 1/3 are going birdless with the other third having some sort of bird work.....with varying results including disqualifying faux pas.

If I was up there I could of gotten word to Nancy (nrcgsp) with the running order and I've also been known to type up the running order on my laptop and then make copies with my laptop & printer I carry in the trailer. I promise I'll do my best @ keep you posted during the Chicken or relaying for Nancy to post. :D

I have heard the same thing about no water and it being very tough on the dogs, also heard a few of the best they had that went the hr didnt have birds. Allott of dogs being picked up because of the heat and from what I understand thier is still plenty of room at the top for a winner and that says somthing with a 60 dog stake. I believe they have 8 braces left to run.

Thanks for the update Ken. Dennis called me late last night as well. Sounds like the conditions were a little rough the last 2 days. Course 1 was probably worse case scenario for Bandit, oh well. It sounds as though Sonny drew a good brace time this morning. She might be running as we speak! Good Luck Ken.

Just came from there - not as hot as in years past and not nearly as hot as it was up in Circle,MT at the Reg. 14 ASD Ch. (68 dogs drawn) or the US Chicken Championship (38 dogs drawn) we went to in Kenebec, SD. I had to run Scoots at nearly noon on the hottest recorded day in MT this year at the Reg. 14...and made it to 34" with two finds before he self combusted!!   Bugs hunted a great race there in cloudless skies, upper 80's for 55" but no finds and picked him up. Lessons learned and some work to do for me and my dogs for sure if I wanna be competitive. The RU came from the brace right after his when it was hotter yet. It's how you learn what your dogs are made of and what to do better to get ready in the future. I didn't hear anyone complaining particularily at either of those trials, especially at the US Chicken where it was oven hot. Those dogs totally ripped and those handlers were going all day. Watched one handler drawn in 5 of the 6 daily braces handle his 5 braces and scout the other one he wasn't in. It's what they do and easy to see how they've over the years steadily developed pointers to be the pinnacle of the trial game by testing 'em out there!

Hopefully the weather, the conditions, the birds, etc. will ferret out a great championship performance for the GSP's at the Sharptail. Great attendance and always good to see and visit with the gang at those things! Good luck to those left to run. Jason, Dixie was up this morning 2nd brace of the day I think, probably done by now - hopefully she had a great outing! She looked good out training.

Hey Doug did my dogs get there okay, I gave them directions on how to get there with a road mape and they should have gotten there on Tuesday. I think they were braced to go yesterday I was hopping to get there by then, but could not get a flight, they are pretty automatic so they should do just fine.

Right on Joe!! I don't know - I didn't hear of any dogs rolling in with knapsacks on but imagine they got there just fine and probably setting a mark right now!! :D

Yah Jer, sat this one out this year. My buddy/training/hunting partner was judging plus I only had two days to be there before I had to get home to work. I have no idea who is winning - Rich and Bonnie take the judging seriously and know better than to share/gossip even with their best friends - especially me!!  I was hauling a horse for Rich (judge) and his dad so went down there with them and hunted with Rich's dad and my buddy Alex while the boys fought it out at the field trial!! Had ourselves a little fun!

No one named champ as of (pm. Talked to Rich and J R and Moon were in the 1st brace of allage and had a good job for both, no birds and blown pads on 80% of the allage dogs. My boy ended up in a couple of watere tanks from the ehat, he said he is OK. Scarry

Dixie was runner up handled by Justin Wiseman owned by Jason Brooks congrads guys!
Congrats to all the dogs that made it through the hour in those temperatures. Somebody please tell Justin to take it easy on everyone else at Solon Springs, WI in a couple weeks. Geez if we had known he had his kind of firepower the trial might have been "full", just kidding. Let him know we are looking forward to seeing him and hope he enjoys our week up in the north woods.

The All-Age was withheld from what I understand. I believe....emphasis on believe Stacy was third and Moon was fourth.

Congrats to Pat and Brookzee in the OSD.

The AA championship was withheld, but they placed three dogs; Guy in 1st, Staci in 2nd and Moon in 3rd. Guy and Staci didn't have birds.

They drew 17 in the Amateur.

FYI,
Dave
