Post by Blue Dawn Kennel » Mon Aug 24, 2009 12:23 pm

Well fall trial season is in full swing the NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship will be the 3rd NGSPA Championship so far that starts September 9th in Atkinson, Nebraska. Jerry will Rich and Joyce be there??? Hope so love spending time with them, know Eldon and Rabidou will be there as well as Pat Waresk whose training camp isn't to far away. Keith & I are planning on going up then over to the GSPC of Nebraska weekend trial after. Know our clients Heath & Rich & Mark are planning on being there as well, just curious who else was gonna be there.

Best of Luck to all this fall season.

Robbi, Rich should be there with that brood of mutts as well. I would like to come out as well. Think I am gonna try and do it, wanted to go to the sharpetail but that bis 1400 miles from me. Saw a note from Brooks so i guess Dave Walker could be there as well as Doshe. Sounds like a bunch of good ones.

Where is the trial at in Atkinson? I live in Chambers NE which is just south of Atkinson. I have not trialed much but am interested in getting started. Will there be any horses available that would be suitable for a beginner to ride? Would anybody be willing to let a fairly newbie tag along? How long will the trial run?

Thanks
Jeff

The trial is at the Lee Ranch, off Hwy 11 about 4 miles. Watch for sighs for directions I am sure. It will be a horseback trial and few if any spare horses. The parking lot will be open to all and the folks in the deal are very friendly. You will learn a lot and meet a great number of very nice people.

I was told they are starting with the All-Age this morning and a total of 12 braces are scheduled. If anyone is at the Lee Ranch, send us some updates as they become available.

I heard that every dog in eight braces of all-age yesterday was lost with the exception of one that Keith Gulledge picked up in the first brace.

I also heard the same as handlers could not get to thier dogs because of fences and tight turns and by the time they got around the dogs were gone. Also heard not allot of birds to be found. I think the amt starts fri morning hope things change.

The 3 dogs that were lost out on course were all found yesterday morning and all are fine with not marks of any means on them don't even think they had blown pads. So everyone is home safely.

Turned out to be a great stake, I hear. One of the best sets of judges we have ever had. Spot had a find on a group of about 15 chickens, and a second find on a covey of quail. Jax had a find on a group of chickens (don''t know how many). 23 very good all age dogs running. Congratulations Mark Wasserman, for the RU Ch. That is a heck of an accomplishment in a stake like that.

Geez, I forgot to say congratulations to Keith and Robbi also. They win so much it just slips your mind that they should get a pat on the back. Sorry Robbi.

Good job dudes and dudettes!! :D Congrats!! Interesting hearing about all the lost dogs/fences, etc. I watched the US Chicken Ch. for 2.5 days, arguably the pinnacle AA dogs in the country and never saw a lost dog the whole time (I know they had one the day before I got there as they were talking about the Garmin LR antennae picking up the dog 4 miles away). They navigated a ton of fences and gates - lots of cooperation amongst the competing handlers/scouts to hang on to those dogs. Very cool. Seemed like all the scouts/handlers had fencing pliers on their saddles/belts at the US Chicken and those dogs heeled extremely well, from walk to full gallop, to get 'em thru gates/fences. I know I left thinking "holy crap, I gotta teach my dogs to heel!!". Could you let down/put back up fences at this shorthair Chicken Ch.??

Looks like a good Am. draw too!! Thanks for the updates!

I hope I am not repeating just some gossip, but the word was that the adjoining rancher made it clear that horses or dogs found on his property would be shot. So the handlers and scouts did not dare to go in after any dogs, and there were some people holding their breath until lost dogs showed up. There are a very few turkeys who will scout in a way to harm their opponent's dog, but the great majority of scouts work cooperatively - you take that side of the course I will take this one, sort of thing, and I have several times had the opposing scout find Spot on point and call it out for us.

It appears that the running order for today and tomorrow are all together, as it jumps to Wednesday. Can one assume that somewhere around brace 6 or 7 will start tomorrow morning??

Sorry everyone for the non spaces and errors that I didn't get deleted off of there. I've since corrected.

As for the winners of the 2009 Prairie Chicken Amateur Shooting Dog Championship the winners are~

Winner~ Uodibar's Fly High Freebird "Leo" owned/handled by Hayley Killam

Runner Up~ SM Queen High Flush "Abby" owned by Chris Streitenberger and handled by Mark Wasserman

I believe with this win and with her win with Lola @ the Sharptail that this makes Hayley the leader for the Amateur Handler of Year.

Don't know much of an update but I went out late yesterday, when they were just finishing up. Met a couple of people and a real nice guy from Kansas. He said the dogs were finding birds, maybe not handling them but finding them at least.

Jeff, Thanks for the update. I know mine ran Tuesday morning at some point. I heard the temperature is a little more bearable this past week, so it's not so hard on the dogs...hopefully.
If anyone else hears anything, an update would be appreciated.

Eldon has been reporting that there are plenty of birds in NE this year. Yes, ESPN or someone should televise this great sport. It would be great if they would televise it during one of the wild bird events when there are lots of birds being found.

John,
Logistics would probably be an issue , but I would think there could be interest, and it could ceratinly help the sport in general. Since watching the Cubs :( & White Sox :) has become soooo painful, and it looks like they can "blackout" the Bear games this year. Show Field Trials on the T.V. instead! !
Thanks for the update on the trial, look forward to hearing about the winners soon.

There was someone showing the Bird Dog Challenge on the Outdoor Channel. It was kind of fun to watch but I am sure they had to edit a lot. I would like to see a few more videos posted on youtube or something. If that would happen and had enough of a draw, then maybe they could get some TV exposure. Then again, do we want it on TV and then some AR group to work harder against it??

We will never win by trying to hide. If we can't defend our position now then it will only get harder the longer you put it off. Meet them head on now with truth and openness and educate the votes of tomorrow is what we need to win.
