In the 1st photo, a couple of observations: the shooter's head is off the stock and sneaking a peak, (I suppose he feels he smoked it) which he did. Second the bird's head is up and looking around so it is mortally wounded bu not dead yet.
What it is for sure, is a great photo. Was the dog pointed before the shot?

Yah, I snapped about 6 pics shooting continuous drive during that flush/shot. Before he nailed him, the bird was going dead away and hard to see against the hill. The shot kind of spun him and his ringneck showed up great but it also caught Alex coming off the gun in that frame. Pretty sure I deleted the ones I didn't use - if not maybe I'll combine 'em into a "flipbook" which kind of makes an action video out of all the continuous drive still shots.
Yes, we don't shoot 'em if they aren't pointed - walk around with empty guns chatting and solving all the worlds problems till we get a find. It was an awesome find with his Smoke pointing and my Stitch backing. About the only way to get decent birds flushing/shooting pics is to have them pointed so you can get the camera up and ready - I still almost missed the shot cause we'd worked that bird up through the thick brush about 100yds before he hit the clump of sage and Smoke nailed him! I cropped that photo but in the original you can see Smoke's orange collar thru the brush on the right. (oh, his dog stayed broke thru the shot/fall, Stitch busted and stole the retrieve!

)
I'm not much of a phez guy but man, there sure isn't anything like it when you flush one of 'em!

I'd imagine the Pheasant championship has some exciting, cackling flushes!

The flush of a pheasant, if you can make them fly, makes my shirttail go up and down my back like a window blind.
Love the photo's though Doug, you have a good knack of catching things that you cannot explain, Ruff Grouse are the worst and I love the whirrrr of wings of quail and the chirp and buzz of the huns.
I want to get a wild Prarie Chicken very badly, gonna try and get that done. All my dogs are home and we are going hunting after the 1st Saturday in November, seasons open.

Vegas went birdless in the ASD and OAA. Think she held her own in each stake - just needed birdwork.

Couldn't get Nike ready for the hour - not enough time after the pups so I did not run her.
Cover was high as the beans had not been harvested yet. Tough to see dogs at times.
I had a ton of fun. Real nice trial. I'm going back next year for sure.

Jerry,
Isn't Kane (the winner of the All-Age and Amateur) out of the same female that you nice young dog is out of?
That female must be one heck of a producer.

Thanks guys! It was a big win for us!
Runner up was CHICOREE'S JACKIE V NUKE handled by Dan DiMambrio and owned by Fred Ryan.
We only got to run the Region 3 Derby because remnants of hurricane Ida were starting to come through. The OSD had to be cancelled.
Derby:
1st Place - Kosta Boda -h Dan DiMambrio, O - Bob and Joan Rossbach
2nd Place - Cruzin's Probable Cause "Mac"- h Matt Basilone, O - Rob Errigo
There was no 3rd place.

As Jerry said - Casey produced both Kane and JR. She also produced Doc Reynold's Ruby female who is a litter mate to Kane. Another nice one there.
Blue Hen for sure.
