D. E. HAWTHORNE BORDER CLASSIC

Columbus, ND—The Dr. D. E. Hawthorne Open All-Age attracted an entry of 74 dogs and the companion Derby drew 28, representing fifteen different handlers in the two stakes. Judges for both sakes were Harold Davis of Pooleville, TX, and Lynn Oxendine of Joplin, MO.

Winner of the Derby was Strut, pointer male owned and handled by Tommy Davis. Placing second was Chinquapin Bisco Cash, also a pointer male, owned by E. L. “Ted” Baker of Jacksonville, FL, and handled by Slade Sykes. Third was Whippoorwill Hot Dame, pointer female owned by Preston Trimble of Norman, OK, and handled by Allen Vincent.

The All-Age winner was Funseeker’s Rebel, pointer male owned by Frank J. and Mercy Fonseca of Miami, FL, and handled by Fred Dileo. Miller’s Southern Pride, second, is owned by Floridians Mike Furney and Chip McEwen and was handled by Rick Furney. Third was Murray’s Rustler, setter male owned by Dr. Bill Murray of Boise, ID, and handled by Rich Robertson.

NORTH DAKOTA CLASSICS

Columbus, ND—The North Dakota Derby drew 22 dogs. Whippoorwill War Dance, first, was handled by Larry Huffman. Second was Strut with Tommy Davis; third was Market Guru with Allen Vincent.

In the North Dakota Open All-Age, with 69 dogs drawn, first was Lester’s Dollar Bill, pointer male owned by Charles and Heather Klinck of Union Springs, AL, Billy Wayne Morton handling. Second was Chickasaw Butterfly, pointer female owned by Dr. Ron Deal of Macon, GA, and handled by Lee Phillips. Frontline Striker, pointer male owned by Woody Watson of Albany, GA, and handled by Tommy Davis, placed third.

Nineteen different handlers came to compete in the four stakes held at Columbus, ND. Record entries accounted for nearly 200 dogs for the two Derbies and the two All-Age Stakes.

PELICAN OPEN ALL-AGE STAKE

Broomhill, MB—The Pelican Open drew an entry of 38 dogs, judged by Dr. Rick Carlisle of Grand Junction, TN, and Sheldon Twer of Oakdale, CA. The winner was Short Skirt with three finds. The white and black pointer female is owned by Jimmy Honea of Oakfield, GA, and was handled by Robin Gates. Second was In The Shadow, pointer male owned by Carl Bowman of Louisville, KY, and also handled by Gates. Shadow competed in adverse conditions and also scored three finds. Third was Clowers Thunder Strike, pointer male owned and handled by Torben Hansen of Reno, NV. Strike was placed on the merits of his ground race.

Winner of the Pelican Derby was The Tennessee Waltz, pointer female owned by Michael Peretto of Export, PA, and handled by Mazie Davis. S F Countrysong, pointer female owned and handled by Larry L. Smith of Altoona, IA, gained second, while Erin’s Southern Girl, pointer female owned by David Sylvester of Birmingham, AL, and handled by Colvin Davis, was third.

REGION 19 AMATEUR SHOOTING DOG CHAMPIONSHIP

Danbury, WI—Minnesota sportsmen Judges Scott Jordan of White Bear Township and Mike Rod of Princeton named Erin’s Prairie Princess champion for her fine performance at the Region 19 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship on the Namekagon Barrens in Danbury, WI. The pointer female is owned and handled by Sean Derrig of Bannockburn, IL. Dr. George and Ann Ihrke’s pointer female Ihrke’s Happenstance was named runner-up.

An extremely competitive field of 33 dogs handled 38 finds on sharptail grouse over the two and a half days of running starting on September 15.

UNITED STATES CHICKEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Kenel, SD—The “transplanted” United States Chicken Championship was held September 3-7 at Kenel, SD, attracting 50 entries.

Judges Jim Tande of Park Rapids, MN, and Shawn Kinkelaar of Effingham, IL, named Chickasaw Butterfly, pointer female owned by Dr. Ron Deal of Macon, GA, the winner. Runner-up was Chickasaw Bud, pointer male also owned by Dr. Ron Deal. Both dogs were handled by Lee Phillips.

BORDER INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Stoughton, SK— The Border International Field Trial started on September 7 with 16 in the Open Derby and 29 in the Championship. Judges for the Derby were Ron Bush of Georgetown, GA, and Scott Kermicle of Dry Ridge, KY.

First in the Open Derby was Mega Touch, handled by Andy Daugherty. Second was awarded to Mega Bucks, handled by Collier Smith. Placing third was Mega Lovely Lady, handled by Andy Daugherty. All three winners are owned by John Sayre of Richmond, IN, and Bob and Sarina Craig of Hatchechubbee, AL. It was a “Mega Clean Sweep” for John Sayre and Bob and Sarina Craig in the three major Derby stakes held in Canada. Mega Touch won the Saskatchewan Derby, Mega Lovely Lady won the Sullivan Derby and Mega Touch completed the tri-fecta with his win in the Border Derby.

The Championship was judged by Scott Kermicle and Jerrell Bryan of Philadelphia, MS. Mega Diamond was named champion and Cypress Gunpowder earned runner-up. Both dogs were handled by Andy Daugherty. Mega Diamond is owned by John Sayre and Bob and Sarina Craig. Cypress Gunpowder is owned by Dr. Larry Mitchell of Franklin, TN, and David Nutt of Ridgeland, MS.
