NGSPA is having their sharptail championship starting on Saturday August 30 just NW of Ekalaka, Mt. This is only one of two NGSPA championships that are run on wild birds. This is truly a prestigious event. Reports are that number of birds are up and the grounds are in great shape.

Good luck to all of the competitors. I wish I could have made it this year I'm going to have to scratch this off my bucket list next year. I look forward to hearing all of the reports.

Drawing produced 44 entries in the ASD last night - probably a record high for the Sharptail. Courses look great and the bird numbers appear to be high. First brace breaks away at 8:00 AM.

Finished 8 braces today with only one dog around clean with bird contact. There were a lot of nonproductives, a couple of bird-less braces, gusty wind and nervous birds. The cover in places is pretty high and with high humidity and temps near 80 it got pretty hot on the ground. At this point, things are wide open. Starting with brace 9 at 7:30 AM tomorrow.

Dean

Today was much better than yesterday. Several dogs had strong runs with multiple covey finds. The morning was cool and cloudy and a great time to run dogs. The first brace produced six (I think) coveys but the second brace only produced one despite strong runs by both dogs. The third produced six (again I think) coveys with two strong performances. Didn't ride the afternoon braces but understand there were a couple of good performances and enough bird work to keep things interesting. The sun broke through in the afternoon and it got a little hotter for the dogs but not too bad. Got through brace 15.

Dean

Any word on how birds are and conditions of the cover?

Lots of spring rain has produced heavy cover in some places.

How are the braces going in the OSD?

I want to thank all who came to the Sharptail. It was truly successful event. I could have not happened without all the help I received. Dean and Diane helping with the cooking lunches, Terry Davis running the dog wagon, RJ Marquart helped Marshal, Tom Davis recently off back surgery helped Marshal also. We had 44 ASD, 40 OSD, 12 OAA and 8 derbies. Again thank you all for participating and helping out where you could. I got home at 1 a.m. this morning and will be heading to the Chicken in a couple of days after regrouping.

All I can tell you only one brace went birdless in championship and that was during the ASD. The next day the area that the two dogs that went birdless produced numerous birds. In one brace over 150 sharptails were observed. One dog had 5 finds on covies of up to 20 plus birds.

Montana Game and parks stated the sharptail numbers were up over 50 percent from last year. Several participants went north of the grounds to hunt sharptail and came back with limits in couple of hours.

We had brats or hamburgers for lunches with baked beans, chips, cole slaw, potato salad for lunch. Home cookies (oat meal rasin nut, chocolate chip, snicker doodles, ginger snaps were for desert.
