Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
I understand 67 were drawn. If they run 6 braces a day. It will take them 5 1/2 days to run. If they have time to run 7 braces a day, that will still take 5 days. Unbelievable. They still have the ASD and OAA to draw. And then there is the Derby. This Championship could take two weeks to run.

When a championship is done correctly, the result is a great entry. I love it. Wish I had a dog in the fight.

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
Looked on weathercast at today's temps and it was 87 for this afternoon 2 braces.
As they say Un-Luck of the Draw for this afternoon. All the other 64 dogs get to run in 45-55 degree temps.
Don't understand why they just had to run this afternoon. End time would be no different.
Don't tell me that running in 87 is Not different then running in 45-55 degree temps.
Know they postponed the Sharptail when temps were this high in the last few years.
If temps were this high at least for a day or so, then Yes, it is the luck of the draw.
2 hours is not bad to postpone to make it safe and equal for the stake.

Good post, really a great piece of information. Hopefully you'll continue to give us some great updates to keep us interested and inspire newcomers so the sport can continue to grow.
How many birds were pointed? Who had a good race? How are the grounds looking this year? Are they still using courses that number in the teens?
Thanks

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
OK, I'll put it bluntly (but with a smiley ) - It's the summer, it's a prairie trial, show up prepared to run in the heat or don't show up - that's the deal, the way it's always been, it's one of the big draws to trials at this time of year. We ran our dog in the Nat'l Am Phez Ch. a couple weeks ago and the truck registered 99 on the thermometer at pick up of her brace. She did a nice job for the whole hour, nice find on a dozen sharpies, proud of her. It wasn't the temperature that kept her from winnin' and it rarely is for those that show up ready to compete in the heat. The Ch and RUCh came from the afternoon 5th courses - those dogs ripped it and it was hottt!hi-tailyn wrote:Looked on weathercast at today's temps and it was 87 for this afternoon 2 braces.

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
How many times have they postponed the Nationals due to weather? Cold, snow rain. More times then not over the last few years.
It is the Winter. They don't live with it. They postpone till it is safe for them and their dogs.
If the Nationals can do it then a small prairie trial can do it for 2 hours. Not a day, only the one afternoon.

Hope you never switch to pointers, they come to a Field Trial to run dogs. Heat, rain, snow, mud, wind, good course, bad course it is what it is.
I just came back from the US Chicken Champ. in SD several days the temps in the high 80's, 30 mph wind, rain .
Just be glad the entry fee isn't $300.00 per dog....

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
I believe that if a dog shows up at a Championship that they should be in shape and able to run in the heat.
Living in Texas 87 degrees is not hot to me. Take extra water out on course with you.
I would be more concerned for an out of shape horse in the heat than a dog that should be in shape to run the hour stakes.
I'm pulling for top dog in brace 17, Lexi. Get it done little girl!

Are the dogs at the Pointer Nats not as good? (just kidding) They postpone due to weather every other year. Is it the dogs, handlers, or judges that don't want to run in the rain or ice?rockyridge kennels wrote:Hope you never switch to pointers, they come to a Field Trial to run dogs. Bottom line I do agree they you should have them in shape to handle the heat.
Here in TX at 8am its 83 degrees and rising.
Point was do you possibly throw out those 2-4 dogs that haft to run in the extreme temps then the other dogs. Just for the luck of the draw.
For the Pro with 10 dogs, it's a numbers game. With some of the Amateurs that have as many or more dogs as a pro it's again a numbers game.
It is hard draw for the amateur with One Bullet.

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
I've had a dog run at Ames the last 3 yrs. and re-qualified again this year. As I'm sure you are aware there are sometimes up to 100 or more riders in the gallery at Ames, the reason they cancel is a safety thing for animals and people. And they haven't canceled due to heat that I'm aware of.. Snow and Ice yes, thunder storms yes, heat NO.
So to answer your question I'm not sure the dogs at Ames are or aren't as good as the ones at the NGSPA Chicken Champ or any other trial, but lucky for you there is always room for one more to run, so get qualified and come on down to Ames...
Point is it's a field trial, if you want more bullets get more, otherwise run or don't run but luck of the draw is just that.
And for the record, I feel your pain, I just deal with it.

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
I was just quoting that the pointers NEVER postpone due to weather. We all have exceptions for postponements in our game.
Just saying it goes both ways Hot and Cold can kill your dog.
When hunting or trialing, You would be hard pressed to kill your dog in the cold, but would be very easy to kill one in the heat.
You can cook one, but you can't freeze one. etc.
Congrats on having the privilege to run at Ames and re-qualified for this year. Best of luck.

Both of my CH placements have come in the afternoon draws. Region 9 ASD last year, drew 5th brace on the last day. Region 9 AAA drew 4th brace. Just gotta be ready!

OK, now that we know about the heat and the cold and when to postpone and when to carry on...
What about the Championship?
Someone out there has some update on what is going on?
Are they finding birds on all course, how many course are they running this year?
Who has the dogs the have made an impression with great race and bird work?

Start running 15th brace tomorrow.
Sadie got around and word is she did a really good job.. Neiman handling (yesterday)
Tac got around with a covey of sharpies (today brace 10)
All I know. But I'm not talking to anyone there. Just calling others and seeing if they have updates...

Re: NGSPA Prairie Chicken Championship
Valid points but I will say if I ever had a dog qualified to go run there at that time of year I'd prepare by going out and working 'em in the cold and the slop since there is a good chance we'd have to run in it! No mystery to the typical weather at most of the yearly trials - occasionally you encounter some real unseasonable, unanticipated heat or severe, wet, cold that might catch your dog out but in general I think we usually have a pretty good idea what conditions we need to prepare for and be ready to run in.hi-tailyn wrote:How many times have they postponed the Nationals due to weather? Any news on the trial?

I believe Robbi said that they would be done this afternoon with the shooting dog, but not sure how many AA dogs they drew.

I do not have the running order but I did find out they had 30 entries in the ASD with 3 braces run yesterday after the AA was completed. Good luck to all.

My little Jax'd Up Trix'd Out Chevy says, "Way to go, Dad!!"
Congrats Brooks, Robbi, & Keith!
Congrats Brooks, Robbi, & Keith!
A dog on point.....steady, yet trembling,
Breathing in and tasting the gentle breeze.
Take a moment for yourself to soak it all in,
All the training, the hard work.....it really has paid off.

Blue is a handsome dog, but not a very big male.
He can sure roll.

Does anyone know much about "Blue" Uodibars Against All Odds?
