GSPCA Nationals

Post by GunDogAdventures » Fri Oct 09, 2015 8:05 pm

Looking forward to attending our First GSPCA Nationals this year at Bechtel. Who else is headed that way?
A dog on point.....steady, yet trembling,
Breathing in and tasting the gentle breeze.
Take a moment for yourself to soak it all in,
All the training, the hard work.....it really has paid off.

From what I have heard they are running 10 braces per day instead of the usual 12 braces.

They said it's been hot and that has been hard on the dogs.

They are doing 11 braces a day. I believe they had three scratches. They started off with catalog brace #13 this morning.

Thanks for the update. WHat is the word on the conditions? It looked really windy when I checked the weather this morning. How did the dogs handle it?

The wind had effect on the dogs. It is supposed to be stronger tomorrow according to the last weather I saw which was this morning. Some of the dogs are having trouble finding birds because of the wind. Some of them are not wanting to punch through the wind instead quartering making their run not as appealing.

A little over a year ago, I found a litter posted here on the Gun Dog Forum by Brian Murphy and ended up picking up a little male GSP. My wife and I trained him for obedience and I followed up with intro to birds and the gun. He showed a lot of potential so in August we sent him off to Phil Mathiowetz at his training camp in Kansas. I told Phil, little Chevy was on the soft side and wouldn't take too much pressure, but we wanted to see if he'd be competitive in the National Futurity. We went up to watch him run this weekend, but had to come home Monday so I could get back to work. Phil called yesterday to inform us that that the little knucklehead took Runner Up!! We couldn't be more happy!! Thanks Gun Dog Forum!!

Hi-Tailyn's Talented Texan
2015 GSPCA Futurity Winner
Owned by Steve Rankin
Bred by Scott Bodenstab
Trained and Handled by Ray Dohse

This has been another incredible week at the GSPCA Nationals. To breed my Hi-Tailyn Katara to Ed Moody's 2xCH FC Eshod Uprising and produced a very nice litter. Want to thank Ray Dohse as Trainer and Handler of all the parents and grand parents of all my dogs and Ed Moody's. The development and environment he provided shows in each of our dogs. Thanks You Ray for all that you provide for our dogs.

Hi Tailyn's Talented Texan is the 4th GSPCA Futurity Winner/placement that I have bred.
2xNGDC FC AFC Echo's Little Bit of Clown was the 1st also at the GSPCA Futurity.
FC AFC Hi-Tailyn Cheyenne was 2nd in the NGSPA Futurity, and
Anozira's Full of Brandi Brice was 3rd also at the NGSPA Futurity.

Want to thank the judges, Andy Gerdes and Keith Bryant for spending 3 days in the saddle watching some really nice dogs.

Congrats to all the other placements owners and dogs.

Looks like TX had 6 out of 8 of the placement dogs. Way to go Lone Star State.

Hearing judges don't agree on All Age Winner. May have run off in the morning. One dog had 5 finds and always found to the front, and one with 1 find after great all age move, but was handy in the middle of brace. Tough decision. Don't remember ever having a run off at a GSPCA Nats only at a NGSPA Nats.

Thanks!

I did get to ride his brace - and it was a site to behold. Couldn't be happier with the job Phil Mathiowetz did with him in just 11 weeks leading up to Nationals. We HIGHLY recommend Phil and Anne of Windwalker Kennels. Looking forward to hunting over him in the coming weeks!!

It is my understanding that Joker had the five finds. Please explain to my ignorant a__ how you call back a dog that has FIVE finds and was always "found in front" with a dog that has ONE find and whatever the heck a "great all age move is".
What was the great all age move and what does "handy in the middle" mean.

I wasn't there, but I was present at a run several years ago when Uodibar's Shoot the Moon had a race where he had five finds. One of the judges termed his performance probably the best "gun dog race" he had ever seen. It's rare for a dog to show an "all age race" if he has that many finds. The judges are looking for dogs who are on the precipice of performance with huge moves to the most distant objectives. An over abundance of time spent working birds can give the dog less time to show its "all age" credentials. It sounds as Joker was caught in the too many finds conundrum and Trey was not showing an "all-age race in the middle. Again, I was not there, but that's how I read the comment. These two dogs are arguably the best two all-age Male GSPs of the last five years or so. Congrats to both their owners Mike Patrick and Brooks Carmichael and their handlers Josh Nieman and Keith Gulledge.

The year Bugs was RU in the AA he had 5 finds - winner, Opal, had one. Sometimes you just get beat, number of finds being totally irrelevant.

Publicly second guessing judges never acceptable IMO...behind the horse trailer with your buddies, sure, that's SOP for field trialing.

Congrats - good dogs all around it sounds like!

If I'm not mistaken, 5 finds usually denotes more of a gun dog performance than an all age performance. Although, in my humble opinion, you see many gun dog performances winning all age nowadays.

Anyway, from what I hear, Joker won the run off and, while guy didn't see it from the gallery, Trey supposedly had a little bobble on a bird.

Regardless, great performances from both of these dogs and Haley's two dogs.

Thanks for the explanation. I heard one of the judges out there filed
a protest against the other judge in that division. Are the judges
even unable to get along and adhere to the rules? New here - but surely
that can't be the norm.

Thank you. When Phil called and told me she had like 9 finds and a good run I was pretty excited but have learned you never know! With her son, Chevy, being named the Runner Up in the Futurity she made her presence known. Time to start hunting!

Congrats to all the placements,Brian I heard your dog had one heck of a hr run. It's an incredible feeling having my dog Allie win back to back National Titles against the best gsp's in the country. Thanks again to BDK and Keith and Robbie for all you have done with her the last couple years. I bred and raised this litter as she was the leftover I kept back so I guess I did something right. Allie is a snappy shooting dog with unbelievable style and honestly she has won stakes because of how she looks on point.

Congratulations to all who placed and for those who did not, it was still better than work.
