Field Trial

Chris,
I have been working with pointing dogs for only two years, I am signed up for a couple of huntest now but what the difference between a hunt test and a walking field trial?

Posted: Fri Feb 16, 2007 5:08 am
by larue
a walking trial is a field trial, which means the best dog in each stake wins,as chosen by the judges.
So unlike hunt tests where everyone can qualify, only the winning dog,or maybe the 2nd place dog gets points toward his fc.
At heart it is a competition vs a qualifing event.

Larue summed up the difference between the two pretty well.

I'm glad to hear that your signed up for a couple of Hunt Tests, they are good venues for the handler and dog to get used to working in an event type atmospshere.

Not sure how close you are to Kelly Farms, but you are more than welcome to come out and visit and see what it's all about. You can walk behind the braces as part of the gallery and see first hand what the dogs do.

Chris thanks for the premiums, filled out the entries and we'll be there. The last time I was at Kelly Farms it rained for three solid days. It got to be quite a mess with even 4 wheel drives getting stuck. I managed to get out even pulling the dog trailer. hopefully it will be a bit drier this year.SDGORD

It'll be good to have you there.

Was that mud pit at the Gordon HT a couple of years ago? I remember people telling horror stories about that. Didn't the tractor have to pull out 20 or so vehicles? We were a bit wet the weekend before out there but not as bad as that weekend.

That was last year at the North Country HT, I havent been that wet taking a shower. A friend brought his motor home and we had visions of that disappearing in the mud. But he got out without incident. Some of the folks that got stuck would have gotten stuck on dry pavement. But for the last bunch that got stuck they had to try to get through the canyons the tractor and stuck rigs made.
Drier would be better. SDGORD

I have a gut feeling the weather man will cooperate for us this year. Optimism never hurts!

They changed the AKC website a little and now I'm not sure what "Limited" means. Does it mean that only dogs with placements can participate or does it mean only GSP's can participate?

Limited Gun Dog Stakes are open to dogs that have placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or fourth in a Gun Dog Stake, either amateur or open. Or have taken 1st place in a Derby stake.

Hope that helps.

Hey Chris,
Is the GSPCMN going to have a hunt test out there the following weekend. The AKC website says the GSPCMN is having a test on April 21 & 22 but the GSPCMN website has no info on the hunt test that I could find. I plan on trying some jr. hunter tests this spring for fun and hopefully to put a Jr. Hunter title on my little white wonder.
Thanks,
Clark

Sounds great. One question. Can I enter my dog in the Saturday test and the Sunday test or is it just one run per weekend? If I can run on both days I'd prefer it.

I signed up for both days, thats how it usually works I am told.

Nah, each day is a completely separate event. I enter one day or another all the time. It's often a smart thing to do.

Best regards, Greg J.

Yep, it'll be interesting.

My dog is in the last brace of OGD and the first brace of OLGD.

Probably won't be much if any snow left by Saturday. Highs is the 40's today and upper 40's for Friday should take care of allot of it. Watch out for muddy trails leading in though....

Hi Chris, nice meeting you up at Kelly farms. Had a good time the weather as you predicted was great. We were braced with Jim the first brace Sat morning. We would have preferred not to have a suicide bird so close to the breakaway but thats the way it goes. We will probably run into you later in the season take care. SDGORD

Good meeting you at the trial too, wish I would have had more time to socialize but had to keep on top of things to get everything done in two days.

I'm half way kicking around the idea of making it a three day, Friday-Sunday, trial next year. Might add an Amateur Walking Derby and Amateur Walking Puppy stake too. Maybe we could have a 7:30 start and wrap up by 4:00 or 4:30 each day and be able to enjoy things a bit more instead of rush rush all the time.

Anyone have any feedback about those ideas it would be apperciated.

Chris,

With as many entries as there were this year, I could see it be a 3 day event. I think we are going to see an increase in participation in Walking Trials in the coming years.
