Must be a member to run but membership is only $30 a year. Trial is by Waterford, just E of Athens. Amateur events involve one dog and handler in a 7-12 acre field with 20 minutes to point, shoot and retrieve 3 birds. The dog pointing a bird earns 10 points, dead bird is worth 20, full retrieve to hand (one step) is 10 points and if the dog picks up the bird but doesn't bring that close then 5 points. You get 6 shells and each one not used to bag those three is worth 10 points. Time stops when 3rd bird is in hand and each minute is 2 points. The dog must stop for point w/o command but once you call "point" you can whoa the dog to remain steady. No judging that one point looks better than another, field coverage, or obedience. If the dog won't work or mind, you just won't find birds! $55 per dog, per event to cover birds, awards, bird planter, scorekeepers, etc. Have to tell Eric you want in by Wed night as running orders are drawn 2 days before the event. Nationals for Amateurs will be in SW IN in Jan and a dog must have run in 4 events before Dec 31st to be eligible. No wins or placements required, just participation in 4 events so running in all 4 events this weekend would qualify. Local trials are not for cash payout although a side pot for this is allowed if participants are interested. Purse for the Amateur Nationals last year was $5,000 paid to the top 5 dogs.
