I'm not sure I will make the event myself either.
I hope to have my !6 mo. puppy entered in Derby. She was at summer camp in North Dakota for the month of August. I'd like to see her run and handle.

Mind if I ask who she went to camp with?

I'm very pleased with Dennis and his development of my pup. I had my hands full when I ran her this spring.

This is an exerpt from one of my first pleas when she was 8 months old.

"Last weekend I attended the ****** Walking Trial at the ***** Setter Club.
Luckily, my bracemate scratched and I got to run the puppy alone. She began with a small cast at the breakaway.
Unfortunately reappearing from behind the judges.
Once she caught up, she broke out ahead perhaps 200 yds. and was standing head high on point.
She didn't break point until I was within 5 yds. of her. I flushed the quail and fired the blank and brought her forward.
She established another point farther down the fenceline and I blanked that bird as well.
At that time the judges instructed me to take a cut in the woods to the next field.
I whistled up the dog as she had continued down the fenceline and into the woods.
Well, when she came out of the woods she apparently didn't see me and started to backtrack on my scentline. Past the breakaway!
Luckily I was able to get her attention. She came over some small hills and rejoined me. Needless to say she wasn't placed.
When I spoke with one of the judges later I asked him the approximate distance she was from us.
I thought perhaps 3/8 of a mile, I knew it was more than a 1/4.
He told me he had a quad on the grounds and that the dog was more than a 1/2 mile out.
We finished the day with consistent casts of 300- 400 yds."

As a postscript I had left the event when she unraveled in Am. Walk Puppy. I was supposed to run the next day and thought it would be even worse. I got home to a meesge that my dog had placed!

She went on to place in three out of the four trials I entered her in. She would run big, but wouldn't handle. So....no firsts.

I really felt she needed more room to run and the opportunity to be handled off of horseback.

I have access to 350 acres but none of it is fenced, so I really couldn't let her run.

Through referrals from some of the people I respect on the circuit I was led to Dennis. There were some other options, but Dennis returned my phone calls in a punctual manner and conducted himself as a gentleman.

I look forward to seeing her run again.

Dennis is a good choice and he is a good trainer and will do your dog justice and work the dog.

OK, am I the only one? From the description you give of the way your dog runs, you have a winner. It is probably unfortunate the dog was running in Walking stakes, at breed trials where close range was desired. My take anyway.

John, sounds like she did a pretty bang up job in my book too. I don't think "handle" in a puppy stake should be a major criteria for winning the stake. I would guess that your assumption of the situation was probably accurate. But maybe, just maybe there was four other dogs that showed the same motor, nose, and drive but handled better

I miss the fine friends in the GSPC of Lincoln. I was a member of that club while in Grad school, they are good guys (and gals).

So I take it that Brian won't be going to the NGSPA Sharptail Ch. in Montana?

The LGSPC club is one of my favorite places/clubs to attend. No matter how many dogs they put down the trials are very well organized and run.

They also have some of the best grounds I've ever run on.

Sounds like you have a really nice pup and you certainly have a good trainer/handler in Dennis.

I won't make the fall trials up there but hopefully I'll be back in the spring once we finish our hunting season down here.

Best of Luck. CR
There's a reason I like dogs better'n people

Zephyr,

I also have a young dog with Dennis. Sunny is a 27 month old that will be running in her first broke dog stake. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and ask that you keep yours crossed for me.

Unfortunately I will not be able to make the trial. If you do go, please seek Sunny out and give her a head scratch for me. I've not seen her since March and hopefully will make one of the trials in later September.

Hey Ken, I frequent Dennis kennel quite a bit and can say that Sunny is doing a fine job and she is getting plenty of head scratches. She is a good looking dog, I really like the way she is built, I know when I am there she gets my attention, as do all of the dogs, I absolutely love being around the dogs.

I will not be attending the Lincoln, I was going to run Jill but I have some other plans this fall with her.

Good luck to all.

Chip :D

To all,

Thank you very much for the positive feedback.

But, I should clarify things a little.
The first description of her run was in an open derby stake and I'm sure there were at least four 18 to 24 mo. old dogs, perhaps broke, that out shined her in all the aformentioned qualities.
And after talking with the judges, when she returned from her backtracking she was no longer hunting. She was running past objectives that dogs both before and after her had located birds. She was just running for the pure joy of running. In this stake she was not placed.

In amateur puppy, the second stake, all she did was try to play with her bracemate, a pointer.
She kept up with pointer where ever it went, but never really got back to business.
The pointer won the stake.

Tejas, I'll be glad to reciprocate.

And if anyone sees Natasha on the chaingang ( I'm told she's the vocal one) please knuckle her ears for me.
