DT systems vs Dogtra Bird Launcher

Post by Ttown » Fri Apr 02, 2021 8:10 pm

I'm in the market to purchase a pair of Bird Launcher's and a Remote. I currently have a Dogtra ARC Training collar for my dog It is 3 years old and works great! Only had to change the batteries once so far and the collar is very waterproof as my dog loves the water. I could purchase a DT systems bird launcher right off the shelf at my local Bass Pro Shop. Or order a Dogtra online. So my question is does anybody have any preferences ?

Either of the launchers work very well. I have a DT that is twenty years old. I did have to change the receiver a couple years ago. Dogtra has always been 50 to 100 dollars higher. Checking prices now it is hard to tell. Dogtra around $340. Did not find a for sure price on DT. Plus if you order one now nobody knows when you might get it...........Cj

I think they are basically equal in terms of quality and reliability.

I have Dogra launchers and the oldest one is at least 20 years old and still works fine. I have changed batteries on all of those components over time and it is a snap.

I think the biggest difference is how you load the trap. The armed DT loads from the back through some kind of trap door as I understand it. The Dogtra loads from the to and then you close the tap with an arm that connects to the trigger solenoid.

The 2 things I like about the Dogtra are that the springs are adjustable to throw a quail well up into the air or to open softly(and relatively quietly) allowing a pigeon to sit there before taking flight and that the traps have beeper locators so I can easily find the traps in cover when I am done. I HATE searching around for a trap in the weeds.

Whatever trap you buy, mount a piece of 1/2"plywood on the bottom of the trap about an inch wider than the trap, all around. The plywood keeps the operating mechanism off the ground which keeps it from getting wet and malfunctioning. The plywood base also allows you to install a hook to hand the trap on the wall when not in use. I cut a hole in the base for a finger ,which makes it easier to carry. For the Dogtra, you may wish to cut a second hole at the back of the trap to make adjusting the spring easier and quicker.

the DT has the same features. I would have lost mine along time ago without the locater. They are nearly identical.......Cj

Thanks for the responses and it does seem to be a toss up but since they are so similar and I already have had good success with dogtra Trainimg collar then I think I will try the Dogtra. I also like the idea of mounting the plywood to the dottom.

Don't remember which it is but I prefer the 1 which uses 9v batteries. Go train and dead battery, just pop in a new 9v.
Mine last 2 years if I don't forget to turn them off

I'm partial to the Dogtra Launchers for several reasons. Yes, they are a little more expensive but the electronics are worth the difference.

1) Overall I think the electronics are better especially the Transmitter
2) I can operate a second launcher from the receiver by using a patch cord
3) If you do any versatile dog training for duck search the duck sound from the receiver is useful for expanding the search
4) The electronics are compatible with several brands of wingers

I'm probably too late to the party, but I'll tell you that I've had terrible times with DT remotes. Going back through old emails, I've sent back remotes in 2012, April of 2016, July of 2016, (I think one in 2019) and recently 2021. The one in 2021, I sent a remote back and two receivers and got a 207 dollar repair bill. I complained enough that they decided to refund me the money for the remote, but it's been a "bleep" show. The thing is, I keep them inside, I'm not training a sting of dogs or anything, so it's not like they are getting wore out.
I once asked the guy from collar clinic if he would repair the remote and they wouldn't touch them. Said they were too poorly made.

I've never seen Dogtras fail. (I have buddies that have them) and if I had it to do all over again, I'd buy Dogtras. That's just me though.
