HI,
Just wondering about Richard Wolters books, are they the best methods of training or is there anything better out there?

I really like "The Best Way to Train A Gun Dog: The Delmar Smith Method" by Bill Tarrant.

You should do a search on "Wolters" in the past threads. I don't think you will find very much that is complimentary.

Anyone know where to get a copy of Walker's book? I have looked at books a million and have not found it. I know there are other places but I wouldlike to streamline the search.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.

You can go to this site for Walker's book, videos, pinch collars and other things:

I have ordered from him a few times. Orders were always sent out fast.

I read his Gun Dog book in Nov. IMHO there is alot better stuff out there. I would read all the books that you can and use the stuff that makes sense to you.
I really like "The Best Way to Train A Gun Dog: The Delmar Smith Method" by Bill Tarrant.
Karen suggested a good book. I don't know what kind of dog you have but you might get some books written by people who breed or train that type of dog.....scott

fozzer, one thing I have seen here on this forum is that everyone has their own opinion. I am reading and starting to use wolters's gun dog book for my brittany pup. I decided on Wolter because it was recommended by another guy that trained alot of brittanys. Since I have got the book my vet and another friend has also recommended to use Wolters as they both have had good luck with his method.

When I was researching what training book to get, I noticed there are many ways to train a dog. This is my first bird dog and I want to train her my self. My dog is also a family dog, so I will keep her no matter how well she turns out. For my case I felt like Wolters gun dog was best for me. But like I said at first it is all a matter of opinion.

But like I said at first it is all a matter of opinion.
Jmas, There are lots of things that are a matter of opinion but when you have dozens of pro and ametuer trainers tell you what they have found out through experience it no longer qualifies for just an opinion. People who have already been in your shoes have tried to save you from the problems they have experienced. It would be wise to take some advice given to help you.

That said you are free to reinvent the wheel if you want but you sure are ignoring the most valuble tool in the world and that is the experience that friends have already had.

Good Luck,

Ezzy

Wolters...there is better out there some way better

Books aren't as good as dvds and aren't as good as getting hands on via seminars or local bird dog club

Some dogs just don't follow written text and there just isn't a mitchell on demand type manual on dog training..any mechanics will get that

Can't wait till Ricks new book is out he and Sharon are working on it

Delmars book with Bill tarrant is good ...Bet they wish they could update it like delmar did his DVD and the newer method of whoa post he does.

I liked delmar's book, but I think Chuck Johnson's "Training a Versatile Dog'' follows a more simple process for a beginner.
