A Hunter's Fireside Book-by Gene Hill

Post by llewgor » Fri May 12, 2006 6:57 pm

An enjoyable book to read.

Here's a quote from the chapter called The First Gun as he explains his feelings about giving his daughters they're first guns.

" A man today can't leave too much behind in terms of worldly goods. His children and their children have to get by as best they can. So I chose to leave an attitude about our woods and fields and swamps and ponds and frost and snow and nor'east squalls.
As long as there is such a thing as a wild goose I leave them the meaning of freedom. As long as there is such a thing as a cock pheasant I leave them the meaning of beauty. As long as there is such a thing as a hunting dog I leave them the meaning of loyalty. As long as there is such a thing as a man's own gun and a place to walk free with it I leave them the feeling of responsibility. This is part of what I believe I have given them when I have given them their first gun.[/i]

I think I have every book Gene Hill wrote. Should be required reading for our youth and many that aren't so young.

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Good stuff, thanks for sharing.

Another good author is Horace Lytle. I have most of his books, I think. Wow, he's got some great stories!

My Gene Hill books are going to my boys. My older son has read "Tears and Laughter" a couple times. He gets very upset about the GSP story towards the end...as do I. A true heartbreaker.

Great author and must reads for our future hunters/outdoorsman.
