Topo maps

Post by jimssetters » Sun Jul 15, 2012 7:53 pm

I have bought a used Garmin 220. I would like opinions on buying the topo maps for this. Is it a good thing, waist of money, or depend on its use? What size micro chip is needed?

They aren't necessary but I have found them helpful in certian areas. I bought topo 24k (full US) , not sure what size card, 2 gig i think.....

I think to determine if its worth it or not is up to you really, do you hunt hilly terrain? The nice thing about it beyond topo is that all the fed lands
are on it and some if not most of the state lands.

I think they are a waist of money, because the screen is too small.

Maps are free if you learn how to download and creat a map set.

These are public domain maps and will last forever. I get about 11 states on a 2 GB micro SD card with room to spare. Ebay is full of people selling these maps for around $20. They will load whaterver you want state wise on a 2 GB micro card. I buy my micro cards on Ebay used in lots for about $3 a 2GB card. If you are computed savey you can do it all for free.

Just looked and the prices on Ebay are down too about $16 free shipping and there are not as many seller as the were, only about $10 profit at that price for your work in building the card from public domain data maps. It took me about 5 hours to learn how to build the map sets and download to a micro SD card so $16 is well worth it.

Example Ebay item # 220939668841
