What is an Avatar?

Post by Ruffshooter » Thu May 17, 2007 1:48 pm

As you can tell I have very limited CPU skills (typing is about it) and even less lingo knowledge. And how do you use it. I have not posted a photo in the (AVATAR?) because I do not know what it is nor how to use it or where to find it.

I am sure it is all right here in front of me.

That little picture next to your name is an avatar. You can change it from the Profile link above. All the way at the bottom.

go to "Profile"... it is in green fonts where it says "Home, Albums", ect. You can selelct or upload an avatar there. Avatars are usually 91 x 91 pixels in size, but they are much larger on this board.. Most edit a picture of their dogs and upload it.

Well, I have seen and tried the stuff at the bottom of the page prior with no luck. I have tried again. Evidently my pictures are to large. I need to figure out how to make em smaller. If I can't fix it with a hammer, I am in trouble. :? I liked the arrows also. :)

Hi Ruffshooter.
I'm just playing and trying to figure it out for myself.
I think I have to make a post just to see if my avatar went in correctly.

Here Goes!

I am also not sure if the avatar will link to previous posts I have made or not.

We shall see.

Guess I figured it out and if you right click on the avatar and go to properties it says it is 160 X 120 Pixels.

I wish it could have been a bit larger but this has to do with my hosting site-Photobucket and not necessarily this site.

Some are able to get larger sizes and others, not PC wise, get what they get.

I am sure not an expert at this stuff but sure would be happy to spend the time to help you if you would like.

To answer my own questions, My new avatar does show up in all previous posts.

When I added the perfect pedigree link just below here, it started going into all new posts but will not link to any of the 20 or so previous posts I had already made.

Ruffshooter,

You can use Paint (should be included with Windows) to reduce the size of your pictures for your avatar.

Paint is probably located in Start->Programs (or All Programs)->Accessories->Paint

You can open your picture with Paint, then change the size. There are two selections under the Image menu item, "Stretch/Skew" and "Attributes". You can view the Attributes of your image to determine it's size in pixels, then if too large, you can use the Stretch/Skew option to reduce the size. I would suggest changing the percentages for horizontal and vertical the same amount (ie - 50% size for both) unless you want to skew the image one axis or another.

Hopefully this helps - if you are still having difficulties, I can post some screen shots to assist.

Thanks to all! I got it figured out pretty well and don't need it any larger.
