It is with much regret and painful aching in my heart that I burried a very good dog today... I'm in the wrong dang business to be this attached and softhearted I think.

Miss Ninnescah Northfork "Brownie", beloved female english pointer of Prairie Fire Pointers.
June 6, 2004 - September 29, 2010

May the sun be upon your face, and the wind always bring you the delightful and exciting scent of birds. I will miss you so much. I am so sorry.

Very sorry to get this news, Jess. Sometime when it's not so recent you can tell us what happened.

I'm sure the dog lived a full, rich life with you.

Jess,
Five years ago, I was where you are today......... I cried like a little baby.
So long as the memories remain, they're never really gone.

My thoughts & prayers are with you.

I shed tears to this day over past bird dogs. I completely understand. Sometimes I think I am too weak to own dogs, as their death bothers me so much. :( Then I get a puppy, and I realize that nothing risked is nothing gained. Like the Garth Brooks song "The dance". I'd rather risk my heart, and have it broken, then to never feel that bond/love. So sorry my friend. I will toast your dog this evening.

sorry for the loss: Your emotions, help make you a better dog person and friend to your girl. She truly looks happy and just a tad goofy in her mug shot. She looks like a fun dog and surely enjoyed her life.

This is so so true. I am so sorry. Right now the missing and the hurt is full in your head, but in time the good memories will outshine the sadness. The sadness never leaves, but the good times remebered help bring a smile to your face and some gladdness, even despite the sadness in your heart.

I sometimes hesitate to read these posts as it brings back the pain of lost dogs, but then after the initial pain you remember the good things as well.

I have recently been in your shoes and I am very sorry for your loss, time will heal.

THANK YOU to all who have posted, Pm'd and called with kind words yesterday and today. I have never met any of you, yet I feel like I have a "family" supporting me. Today was better than yesterday, by far.

I picked up "Jenny" from the vet and she is doing quite well. I was astonished how well she was getting around. She wanted out of her kennel several times today, so I let her out and she was hauling around cracking that tail with her nose to the ground like nothing had even happend. Having her home doing well kept my mind off what happend, and re-living it in my head... so much.

I forgot to mention she has anitbiotics and pain meds to take for awhile. (a weeks worth I think) However, she is getting around so good for hardly being able to walk yesterday going into the vet. Although, the meds might be helping keep her pain down so she can motivate.

Once again,

Thanks.

Jess Stucky

As much as I didn't want to open this thread, I just had to because I've been there and know how incredibly bad it hurts to lose a good dog. I put my Sadie down in August of 2008 and I can honestly say if I hadn't picked up a pup in February of that same year, I'd be done hunting......it hurt THAT bad. I'm honestly still tearing up just typing this. :(

My heart goes out to ya.....

Much like ACooper it still hurts to read these posts and 6 years is MUCH too short of a time. My wish for you, that in time, the pain in your heart is replace by the warmth of your good memories.

PFP,
I realize nothing at this point can make you feel much better, let me tell you a story about a man I spent time around when I was a boy.
George Ryman raised English Setter dogs and when I was about 10 years old, he had to put down a young dog that showed great promise, he was very fond of that dog
and after putting the dog down, he came from behind the shed and sat in the puppy pen with me, David he said don't ever go into the dog business, it breaks a man heart.
The comment you made in your initial post brought back that memory, like it happened just yesterday, it happend in 1956. I still think about George and that pup even today. Brownie will be waiting for you as you cross thru the gates, I have no doubt.
RGD/Dave

'THE POWER OF A DOG'
by Rudyard Kipling

THERE IS SORROW enough in the natural way

From men and women to fill our day;

And when we are certain of sorrow in store,

Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware

Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie --

Perfect passion and worship fed

By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.

Nevertheless it is hardly fair

To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits

Are closing in asthma, or tumors, or fits
,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs

To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find -- it's your own affair -
-
But . . . you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
;
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone --
wherever it goes -- for good,

You will discover how much you care,

And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,

When it comes to burying Christian clay
.
Our loves are not given, but only lent
,
At compound interest of cent per cent.

Though it is not always the case, I believe,

That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:

For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
-
So why in -- Heaven (before we are there)

Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

I'm very sorry. There is no way to feel better quickly. It takes time. The only time my kids have ever seen me cry was the night we put our lab down. But why have a dog with no emotional attachment. In the end the joys and rewards (and the memories) far out weigh the sadness. Still, yours was a truly painfull experience and we all feel bad for you. Our condolences.
