My 14 yr old Lab, "The Pope", passed away this year. He died naturally, on his own terms. I couldn't find a good hunting dog poem that expressed how I felt about our time together, so I wrote one. I'm not a poet or a writer, but it came from the heart. A hunting dog's only flaw is they don't live long enough. It's hard losing your best friend, so I'm sharing my poem in hopes that it helps others who eventually will have to endure this loss.
This path you walk ahead of me
Just you and I walk along.
You glance back to see if I still follow.
Not this time my friend.
This time I cannot follow.
This path you walk ahead me promises great treasures.
But this time I cannot follow.
Your tail is high, your nose is keen.
You pause to wait for me.
But this time I cannot follow.
I wish this day would never end. You are my trusted companion, my guide, my soul.
We've walked down so many paths together.
But this time I cannot follow.
I reach down beside me to feel your silken ears once more.
You lean against my leg to reassure me that you're still there.
We savor this moment, knowing that one day this will be our last path together. But not this time.
This time I cannot follow.
Farewell my friend. May you find endless fields and marshes filled with birds at the end of this path that I cannot follow.
One day, we'll walk together again.

Beautiful tribute. Sorry you lost your dog friend. So tough when they go.
