Does anyone have any experience trying to obtain permits to guide hunts on federal lands? I'm interested in trying to obtain permits for bird hunting. I read what the forestry service published on their website but was trying to get an idea for what peoples experience has been with the process.

Thanks!!!

Not a guide, but have some experience with the federal agencies in similar situations, i.e., trying to shoot my TV show on public land. You will need a permit for each district you want to guide within. They will want you to have all the qualifications to guide in your state, of course, including any first aid and CPR cards that are required. They will also want you to carry at least a million dollars in liability insurance. They will take 3% of your gross revenues for all activity on their district. And that's if they allow commercial activities on that patch to begin with. Good luck.

There's no such thing as the "forestry service". It's the US Forest Service. Just sayin'... And ya, there are some hoops but I did some raft guiding with my brother when I was younger and it wasn't that big a deal. Some paperwork, insurance (which is relatively cheap), and 3% of revenue generated (which isn't bad when you compare to what private property owners want for the same thing or even just access through their property to get to public land... not by a long shot). You'll make out alright if you know what you're doing. Mr. Sour Grapes here sounds like one of those guys that wouldn't mind selling it all off to his rich pals out of spite because he had to follow some rules and give a little back (but he's a preserve guy so, there ya go). Anyway, good luck.

Well, well, chuckanut. If you are willing to actually identify yourself I will be happy to engage in this discussion. If you are too cowardly to tell us who you really are, you aren't worth the effort.

In Idaho a guide has to work for a outfitter. You have to pass a Red Cross first aid class. The outfitter does all the paper work, Ins. etc. Then you are given a guides license.
