I would have agreed with this till I saw the pics of the pointers with their head pointing up. I think Ross called it head crank. To me that isn't attractive and takes away from the intennity shown in the eyes and head of a dog looking at the bird. Other than that though you are exactly right.but any dog with a high head and tail on point is just awesome.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Ezzy~I'm going to have to dissagree with you, at least partially. A dog with a high head and tail will win a trial over a dog with a low head any day. The pointer boys call it "class around game". It takes my breath away every time I see a dog keep that pose through wing, shot and kill without flinching a muscle. And I think that other field trialers will agree with me.
On the other hand, I think that a hunting dog that uses it's head and eyes to point toward the game is very beneficial to the hunter being able to tell where the bird is, and where to flush, or if the bird is leaving with it's track shoes on.
That doesn't mean looking at the ground with it's front end low to the ground also. To me that is probably a product of a dog being trained on birds that it can see, and the dog is trying to sight point (looking to take that bird out) rather than scent point.
Look at my avatar dog. She can see the bird, but she is not pointing her head down at it. That's as low as I would like to see it, but I use my dogs for trials as well as hunting.
Those are the two ends of the spectrum, head straight up or looking like they are getting ready to lay down. Most dogs fall in between, but like I said earlier the ones with the high head will win at trials every time. And those are the ones that trip my trigger. JMO
To each his own, but when your dog is only 12 inches tall I suppose he has to keep his eyes on that big bad bird so it doesn't get him. (calm down I'm just kidding about that).

Doug,
I said I like the high head and and tail like your dog shows. Thats beautiful but I don't like the dog looking up at the sky. Ross says you have to get used to it and I ain't used to it yet.
I don't mind the head down though if the dog is intense. Many times it happens when the dog is running and picks up the scent when it is closer to the bird. A high head normally says the bird is several yards away and that is good.
I guess really my thoughts are what the dog does when hunting is the standard and if that isn't good enough for a trial then the trial standard is wrong and not the dog. In other words I have seen few poor points or lack of style if the dog is INTENSE. Thats the secret to purdy.

I have heard that high low head discusion before, nad I agree with Ezzy. Its like a jumpshot in B-ball does it matter if it is pretty or it counts, if the dog points the darn thang and you flush it and kill it thats a pointdog low head, high head, cocked head if the dog points it works.I find any pointing dog pretty and if it works for the owner awesome,I am just a little more liking to GSPs like I said colors and stlye with a personality to boot. And Ezzy thanks to my in-laws(out-laws) and my good buddy a orange and white Britt(sticker-magnet HA!HA!) every now and then aint to bad either.

Not weird at all. There aren't many Chessie owners on this site.dkiller wrote:its weird how nobody says chessies are good lookin
Now if you had asked what breed or breeds has/have each person owned AND what breed they think is the best looking, you would have found out if there was a high correlation between the two questions.
When most people with hunting dogs think of good looking they may be thinking pointing and not really how good looking the dog is.

Not much need to restate the obvious:dkiller wrote:its weird how nobody says chessies are good lookin
But "best" looking is a whole 'nother, highly subjective, thing.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.

Thank you. Each of my four Chesapeakes has been a great blessing. The good ones are out there for those who put the time and effort in to find and work with them.dkiller wrote:rick, you are a very lucky man to have such a beutiful and hard working chessie

Re: opinions
The last thing I buy a dog for is looks. But if it were me picking I'd go Brittany they always great with their hair long or in a Summer/Fall hunting clip. Yes, I'll go with a Brit every time.

Re: opinions
I like shorthairs of course but setters are beautiful on point with their long coats. Plus love a pointer with his head cranked way up and tail too.

Re: opinions
Even being a Britt owner myself, I have to admit that after a long day of hunting, Brittneys are not the prettiest dogs on point. Hair all dirty and mangled and full of mud. But you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way.
