epsom salts

i was just curious. my pointer had a puncture hole in the bottom of her foot and of course it got infected within 20 mintues and by the end of the night she had a huge boil on the top of her foot. took her to the vet and all that and along with anti biotics i am to soak her foot 20 minutes a day in epsom salts. the boil has gone down, but what does that stuff really do? does it literally draw the fluid in the infection out? it looks like the skin is all scaly and its just plain drying it out. just a random question.
